Feeding my addiction

Happy New Year’s Eve! I hope you had a wonderful holiday!

In honor of the closing of the year my wholesaler is having a sale on FOs and I won $25 in store credit via a raffle of their Facebook followers, so I fed the addiction to new scents. *grin* Mostly I managed to stay practical and reorder some of my best ones, like Bubblegum, so that I don’t have to raise my prices for a while hopefully. My fingers started to itch to click, though, and I found three new FOs that I just have to try, which should be here in a few weeks. Mawahaha. Lol.

Anyway, my scent hoarding split personality aside, I ordered a version of Jasmine, Dirt, and Fruit Loops-like FOs. What an odd variety, right?

I picked this variation of Jasmine because I’ve been watching for a more straight forward jasmine blend for awhile. I love the smell of jasmine, but I usually can’t find notes of it when it’s blended in the floral FOs that I have. This FO has been rated at 5 stars by other crafters with several notes about how it isn’t overpowering like most florals can be, so I really think this may be the one. *smile*

As to Dirt… that one I stumbled onto. Lol. You know that I love to blend my own combos and I seem to have become obsessed with more earthy scents the last few months. (Well, not counting my full time obsession with sweets, of course!) This FO is supposed to smell just like freshly dug dirt. I know that sounds rather unappealing in a lotion or soap, but I have two ideas for it. First, it may smell, well, dirty, but if I do a soap with it and kids actually want to go wash because of that scent, then it’s a total win. Second, I think it’ll add a really good layer for a complex men’s or unisex blend. I always love the blends of spice, leather, musk, etc. It’s the layers of scents where you get just a hint of something else different each time that keep me interested in a scent. I may also use it added to my rain and ozone-type scents to give that added boost of realism to them. I love all the bits in the FOs that you can get all poetic about, but when there’s something that let’s you close your eyes and for just a moment seem like you’ve escaped to a special haven…now THAT’S a keeper in my book.

I’m feeling all sorts of Valley Girl “totally” excited about the Fruit Loops-type FO. *grin* When I get really excited or happy the “likes” and “totally’s” seem to burst forward from my years in CA, and this is one of those instances that makes me seem like an airhead. Lol. Anything that might really smell like a freshly opened box of fruity o’s of happiness has to be tried. I need to replace my Jellybean scent because it got discontinued (so sad, but thankfully I have some left until I find a replacement) and I’m hoping this might be a great replacement. Plus I’m always on the look out for a new child-friendly scent.

I’m crossing my fingers the FOs turn out as awesome as they sound (and I’m imagining)! I had some injuries that got me prescribed to bed rest, so it might be a little before I get to work with them, but I’m excited to have a few new options to explore in the new year. I’d like to add that I hope 2013 is a happy and exciting year for you and yours. 🙂 Thank you to those that have been on this journey with me through 2012 and hopefully we have more fun in my first full year of blogging!

Duckies!

I can’t remember if I’ve mentioned it before (I write everything in my mind before hitting the app and sometimes the stories never make it to the app lol), but I want to try to make some rubber duck soaps. The examples I’ve seen are so cute! Basically a soap is poured (either guest round or regular round) and a rubber duck gets nestled into the soap before it sets. Then some soap curls or shavings get placed around the duck while the base is still warm, to cover the spot and make it look kind of like a nest (although there are definitely some whimsical takes on the concept).

I planned to do a pink duck with a tiara first for my honorary niece for Christmas. My first versions of products are kind of coveted, so I seldom let them go, but I’ll give them for a gift that’s meaningful to me, like in this instance. Anyway, while grocery shopping they had an end cap with some rubber ducks and we spotted this pink cutie, and thought it would work. Utter failure. Lol. I used to be an intelligent person, but now I’m not so sure…*grin* I never even looked at the base to guesstimate if it would fit in a mold. Yeah, um…not a single mold, even my large massage bars! *cracking up* The only option if I pursue wanting to use her is if I use a loaf pan, but can you imagine that chunk of soap?! It’d take a kid a year to wash enough to pull it out! (Theory is that embeds make kids want to wash, so they can get to the cute toys.)

I had a free delivery deal come up with Oriental Trading, so I ordered some of their ducks. I figured I was going to have a family of ducks that I’d have no clue what to do with, with the way my luck tends to generally run. *grin* I wanted to make sure that I got something whimsical and gender neutral, so I ordered their dessert ducks. There are four versions of cupcake ducks in the pack and they are adorable. Plus, they’re pretty small so they’ll fit perfectly in several molds. *happy dance* I have a kitty recovering right now, but after she’s better I can’t wait to make a batch of duckies and some Monsters Away spray. *grin* Of course a picture of these cute little buggers will finish this post 😉

Craft Fair

This year I did much better at the craft fair. I have 4 orders to fill, less product on hand, and hopefully several potential customers that will follow up after looking at my website.

I used my cute sample pots and since I couldn’t label the pots I made little signs that I taped the pots to. My little spatulas worked great except when one customer looked at the spatula and then dipped her finger in, twice. I was pretty pleased with myself that I didn’t react at all until after she left (I scooped the lotion out in that area). The only problem that came up was that I decided to use a lotion to sample that has never sold (so I never made more than the 1 oz tester), because I figured it’d still let people feel how the goat’s milk V2 would feel. Weeeellll….I have 3 orders for that lotion now. Lol. I didn’t want anyone waiting to sample if the others were in use. I have learned my lesson. *grin*

My shoe organizer worked amazingly well! I was able to put the scrubs in a few cubbies together, GM V2 and then GM V3 in separate sections, etc. I was even able to group by scent profiles too, so when someone preferred non-food it took only a few seconds to hand them several options to sniff. *happy dance*

I really thought that the A Cookie in the Wash soaps would sell great, like the Dessert Cake soaps, but only my mom ever bought any. Including orders to make I sold 9 Gumdrop Christmas Tree soaps though. *grin* I’m tickled! I sold several mechanic soaps too and then most of the glitter bars.

I started to lose my voice from talking about my products and giving tips to help with dry skin, plus I’m not suppose to be on my foot beyond an hour total, so this had me in near tears. I kept it together until we left though and think I came across pretty professional. That kind of makes my day. *grin*

I’m really proud too that set up was such a breeze. I spent more time facing product (straightening labels, etc) than the actual set up. Lol. The one bummer is that I didn’t get to use my Go Payment card reader. I’ve never had a customer pay with credit while in my presence, so I haven’t seen it in action. I know, I’m such a nerd to be disappointed to not see that, but hey, I’m honest on here. *grin*

Anyway, I’ll probably add some tidbits from the day tomorrow, but am beyond exhausted (you know that horrible not getting anything done but can’t sleep because I’m so tired bit of misery?), so I’m going to attempt to attach the pics and see if the kitten wants to snuggle. 🙂

A small anxiety attack

So I, um, well…I lost track of time. It’s way too easy when you’re on disability because it seems like the world went on without you, but seriously!?! Exactly one week from today is the Overbrook Craft Sale that I reserved a double booth for. *sigh* Don’t get me wrong – I’m excited about the event, but I’ve been operating under the thought that it’s a few weeks away. Yikes! I guess it’s time to start making decisions on the ideas I’ve been debating such as needing more lotions, making and taking a new scrub, and even a new lotion scent. My helper hasn’t been by and I have a stack of new products that need labels. The wholesaler I use even posted a new recipe for bath fizzy thumbprint cookies that looks adorable and might be a good seller, so I started thinking of experimenting with that. I think I need to tone my creative juices down and do what is left of the basics. I can’t believe that just last night I said “in a few weeks”. Lol. Sounds like I’m doing inventory in a few hours! 😉

Honey I shrunk a tree

I was very excited to get my delivery from the wholesaler today. With the superstorm I wasn’t totally sure things would run on time. I always love that feeling of Christmas that comes with deliveries – opening the box(es), digging through the packing peanuts for little treasures, and getting to check everything out up close. I am even happier to tell you that the shrink wrap that I ordered for the Christmas Tree Soap worked nearly perfectly. *happy dance* There is a bit of trimming that needs to be done before shrinking, but otherwise they are great. I had one little oops moment though. Apparently I got a little over zealous with the hair dryer (it’s oddly difficult to act like an adult when working with shrink wrap and even harder to be careful). I went to flip the thinnest tree and it felt weird. I had accidentally warmed a spot on the edge a bit too much and it started to melt! Whoa! I’ve set it aside to deal with later. It still works fine and it’s a tiny spot, but I don’t want to have it in with what I’m selling. I’ll either gift it or sell at a reduced rate…unless I decide to amuse myself by slipping bits of it into my husband’s other soap and make him smell like jellybeans. Lol. Okay, okay. There are a couple of things that make it difficult for me to act like a serious adult. *grin* Anyway, I had to share because I’m so pleased with how sharp they look. A little side note – I noticed as I was wrapping them that the hand painted ornaments have begun to bleed a bit, which is actually cool because it helped give a soft, even more Christmassy look to the soap. It reminds me of taking a picture of a real Christmas tree and the lights having that pretty halo around them when they’re lit. Woohoo!

Tabletop

As usual it’s the wee hours and my mind is going a mile a minute. *grin* I’ve tried to quiet it a bit with a good book and catching up on a stack of catalogs I’ve received in the last few days. (Sure I love to shop from home, but I don’t need four in one day. Lol. I’m more likely to spurge one at a time. *smile*) Anyway, while looking at Oriental Trading’s party catalog, where I usually find cute packaging for soaps and combos, I saw a tiered stand and it got my mind flying again. I’m thinking that a tiered stand, like for desserts and dainty foods, might be a neat way to display soaps, especially the bakery scented items. What do you think? I noticed last year that few actually looked in my baskets at any of the soaps and have been planning my table set up to include a more browser friendly set up. The stand would take up the same amount of space while also displaying them pretty nicely I think. I might just take advantage of the early holiday sales and look for one tomorrow. I love a legitimate excuse to shop anyway. *grin* If you have any display ideas beside my slotted organizer and baskets, please let me know. I love input and ideas!

Amusing myself

I don’t mention it much on here but I have a chronic, disabling illness that I have to work around in order to work on my creations. Usually I only work on things on the few “good days” or when I have a “good” hour. Yesterday I was itching to work on soaps, especially with the craft sale in just a few weeks and I’m addicted to the feeling that I’ve accomplished something. Lol.

Anyway, I got in and decided to finish making a second batch of the sandwich cookie soaps. I had poured the wafers a few days previously, plus I had left over “frosting” from the last batch that I just had to figure out how to make reusable. I had thought out a few techniques that might work for reusing it and happily the first one worked perfectly. I was all gloved up, wafers lined up like little soldiers beside the scale, had the first wafer on the scale, and the piping gun in my hand when I noticed a tremor starting up. My good time frame was up just from the prep work. I knew I had about 5 minutes for the frosting to stay soft enough to pipe though, so I started to frost the bottom wafers. I try to get exactly .25 oz of frosting on each wafer. Holy smokes! The more I did and tried to stay steady the more pronounced my tremor got. About halfway through I was cracking up because they were starting to look like a drunk person had put the sandwiches together. *grin* Some went a bit over the amount, frosting ended up all over the place, and I shook so hard at the end that one almost flew into the mixer’s bowl! Rofl. Thankfully I got them all done, even if they look a bit more whimsical than realistic this round, but had a dash bit more frosting in the tube. As little as there was I wasn’t going to store it and try to freshen up to reuse yet again, so I grabbed a mold really quick and piped the frosting into two gingerbread men. I figure they’ll do a soft set and I’ll just enjoy the odd little soaps. They’re still incredibly mushy today (maybe because they don’t have as much surface exposed to the air??), but what cracked me up is how rough they look. Hopefully you get a chuckle out of the following picture too. 🙂

Cookie Sandwich Soaps P1

I am beyond excited at how the cookie sandwich soaps have turned out so far. I was shooting for a chocolate brown color, but the brown pigment I have wasn’t looking overly chocolatey, so I added the tiniest dash of black matte powder. I had never used powder coloring before, but of course I had researched and knew that a tiny bit goes a long way. I didn’t realize that a sixteenth of a teaspoon was a lot in this situation. Lol. I was kind of upset when I was whisking the batch and saw how dark the soap was turning, but you know me and waste…I decided to pour them and I could remelt for something else later, but they’d be in handy wafers instead of a massive clump. As they began to set I noticed that they continued to darken (I think it was actually the settling of everything from all of that whisking since it took awhile to incorporate the powder). I’m so happy with them now though! They look like chocolate grasshopper cookies or York miniatures. I can’t believe it. I still need to make the frosting to sandwich and I’m going to let that look rather whimsical so that these don’t look too realistic. In the picture they’re a little glossy, but that will dull in a bit. I had a lot of trouble getting them to release from the molds and popped them in the freezer to contract, to unmold. Yeah, um…*blush and suddenly looking all around* I popped them in as I prepared the supplies to paint the trees and I lost all track of the entire world once I started painting. After I was down I was on cloud 9 and got on SL for a couple of hours. I came out to make my tea and was tidying up when I saw an empty mold sitting on the counter. *facepalm* I ran over and yanked the wafer molds out of the freezer. I had left the tree mold on the counter since I was going to add the wafer ones after the ten minute cool down, so I’d only do one round of equipment washing (I take extra measures for that, so it’s a real pain to do it in multiple rounds). Thankfully these soaps won’t be ruined, but I need to let them slowly return to room temperature. If the condensation stays on them I run the risk of the fuzz popping up on them. It’s a common issue that occurs because glycerin is a humectant, so it draws water from the air, and then whatever itty bitty particles are in the air stick to the moisture, making the soaps look fuzzy. The fuzz can sometimes be wiped off carefully with a damp towel, but that can leave a mess too, and I’d rather write off a soap’s cost than sell something that I’m not proud to have my name attached to. So, I’m going to set an alarm next time I have to use the last resort of freezing a mold. Lol. Anyway, I think they’re adorable and can’t wait to make (and post) Part 2. *grin* Let’s hope that part turns out well too!

Cookie Sandwich Soaps

I’ve been playing with the idea of experimenting at cookie sandwich soaps. I’d make two guest rounds as cookies (flat shape like an Oreo instead of regular chocolate chip) and adding a bath whip as the filling. I would probably then package in little gift bags. I thought of making different cream colors and even doing a few macaroon-like coloring, so a few pink, etc. I have a Ho Ho FO which I thought might be good for this, tying in the cookie and cream concept.

I also have been debating on snowmen being my key promotion at the craft event. I thought of doing red and white peppermint swirl snowmen and other wild little combos like that.

A Little Sparkle

Sadly my glitter soaps aren’t as sparkly as I hoped. There is a hint of shimmer as I move them under the light. It was definitely a worthwhile experiment and I realize that part of it is because it was a solid soap base instead of clear. For the outer layer I planned on a clear pour, so I’ll just add some of the iridescent glitter to those too. It was the first time using this flower mold and I was impressed. They have a little detail and are much better than the candy molds I used to use – thicker and massively easier to un-mold. The *cough* lavender of the glitter embeds lightened even more as they set it seems.
