Breakfast with Gummy Worms

I learned about two previously unknown skills that I have while trying to make pancake soaps. First, I am very good at creating khaki colored soap. Even more impressive than this special coloring skill, I apparently excel at creating a pink version of khaki. I used yellow dye and somehow managed to create a really pretty pink hue to the khaki soap. *cracking up* These previously unrealized skills may come in handy at some point, and I appreciate them, but they weren’t very useful this past week. Lol.

I attempted to correct the pinkish khaki soap to match the general hues of pancakes…um, apparently that’s a skill that I still lack despite quite a bit of practice. *grin* I never managed that golden grilled color, but after I poured the pancake soaps I realized that they look like chocolate milk rounds. Doh!

At least the pats of butter turned out fairly well with a mixture of different glycerin bases, although after I poured the first three I realized that I was pouring them waaaay too thick. *embarrassed laugh* At least they look soft and creamy. Here’s the first picture featuring the butter soaps. I’ll probably remelt the thick ones and pour them thinner. I should note that all of the components are scented with the Brown Sugar FO, which smells just like a rich maple syrup. Yum!!

Two of the pancakes are about the right thickness, despite the color issues.

Finally I’ve decided that I should do two for a short stack instead of 3, which looked way too clunky. All that’s left is to “glue” the stacks and butter to one another with a bit of soap, and then I will drizzle a rich brown syrup soap down the stack (well, hopefully I can manage that color, but I’m open to using my imagination *grin*).

While I’ve been working on a proof on concept pancake soap I also ended up with a refreshed search for the worm mold for Worms in Dirt. A very clever friend brought up the idea of searching the toy department and also found some creepy crawly creature chocolate molds. These searches triggered new related search links that I haven’t had before and suddenly I heard the choir sing. Hallelujah! *impish grin* I feel so stupid admitting this, but despite what an imbecile I seem like for not thinking of this in all of this time, I am tickled to have found gummy worm molds. *quick happy dance* They can withstand high heat, have the perfect shapes and characteristics, and I don’t have to pour them individually like I would with lure molds. Even better I don’t have to learn yet how to create my own silicone mold like I was debating. Booyah!!

20130528-014902.jpg See – gummy worm mold

I’ll pour the syrup for the pancakes tomorrow hopefully and then get to testing it. I’m curious to see if I can get a more complicated soap to stay together once it gets wet. *crossing fingers* In the meantime is anyone ready to brave the storm and go to IHOP with me? My kitchen smells so yummy and now I’m craving real make-my-butt-five-times-bigger pancakes.

Pancakes and Boulders

In the morning I tend to resemble Grumpy Cat. I’m pretty upfront about that. My body has a different idea of the day’s cycle (I mean, I’d probably do well as a vampire lol), so when someone mowing woke me early and the pain pills hadn’t kicked in, storm clouds started gathering. *failing at an innocent look* The mailman soon cheered me up with packages from Amazon, thankfully, and I opted to give raging at the world a rest for a bit. (Before those that know me say anything, I added “a bit”. The truce may not hold if the chocolate hides from me later. You have been warned. Plus, we all know that it’s just a matter of time before my sarcasm comes out to play. Put some chocolate on the table and just back away slowly. It’d be wise not to say anything too. Lol.) Anyway, the first box had the new silicone mold in it that I’m going to use for the pancake soaps.

20130515-190544.jpg

I put my pop can in view for a size reference. We all know how much I suck at measurements, so I didn’t realize they’d be a realistic size. To help with the syrup dribbles I also got some injectors. I saw them on a soap crafter site with tips on how to help prevent soap from setting inside of them, and if I can get the technique down, these will be awesome. (I know – they’re originally for giving oral medications to animals, but soap crafters are well known for using things from the daily world for crafting, so what the hey. *grin*)

I think the pancake stack soaps have the potential of being even cuter than the Splish Splash Ducks. *performs a teeny chair dance*

Despite my excitement I’m a bit distracted, though. My mind has a habit of fixating (as if that’s a new piece of insight *cracking up*) and the last few days have been no different.

You see once upon a year (ugh, let’s not visit the exact number please. Meh. Lol.) I had been writing poetry and vignettes for a few years when suddenly during my Current Events class “I am the grim reaper of your dreams…” started repeating over and over in my mind. Admittedly it was a surprisingly grim phrase to go on loop, but I couldn’t shake it. I finished my work before the rest (yep, I was that student lol) and wrote the line. Within ten minutes I had finished the first draft of my poem, which I ended up using a few years later in an international competition.

Around fifteen years later… *cough* (we’ll go with that number and just move on, okay?)…random ideas will plague me just like “Grim Reaper” did. A children’s book series, several poems, and a few careers spawned from these odd occurrences and yet again I’m being plagued. This one is seriously weird though. I learned years ago, the hard way, that I’ll feel like I’m going insane if I don’t work with these phrases somehow, so I’ve been trying to figure out how to please this demon. “Under the Boulders” keeps repeating in the style of “Under the Boardwalk”, although it’s all about the “over the shoulder boulder holder” (that’s a code for bra, brassiere, a sling for the girls, whatever term you like, just in case you didn’t have a really fun loving mom like me that taught her daughter the song early on). *laughing* All I can think of is either a refreshing lotion or drying powder for the heat of Summer that’s coming on. I think I’ll leave “the boulders” out of the marketing though. *grin* Can you imagine witnessing a customer being stopped in the aisle in Wal-mart? “Excuse me, Ma’am, but I love whatever scent you’re wearing! Could you please tell me what it is?” With a blush the customer replies “Well, it’s Under the Boulders Bewbies Refresher.” *shaking head* And people thought that Poe was…interesting. Hah! “They ain’t seen nothin’ like me.” 😉

Breakfast Anyone?

I got a little…imaginative…the other day when I took an extra dose of pain medication to try to tame the beast for a spell. I did what any other bored woman who is addicted to technology does while distracting their brain – I shopped on Amazon. *cracking up* I had to order something for my mom and it’s incredibly logical to add things for yourself to get to the magical total that gets you free shipping, especially when you’re not registering on the sane scale. *grin* Logic, dear Watson. While looking at silicone molds (isn’t that what you search when spoiling yourself? Lol.) I ran across an intriguing mold that made me think of breakfast. To be fair I’m kind of obsessed with breakfast foods anyway, just ask my husband who never heard of eating breakfast for dinner until me, and still doesn’t care to do that ten years later, which fuels the obsession further. Ahem. It’s a rather simplistic mold, but my brain suddenly started picturing different steps to create a rather fun soap. Here’s the mold:

20130510-132516.jpg I’m going to try making soap pancakes. *flashes a huge smile* I hope to pour a few shallow disc soaps, use my small square mold from the Lumps of Coal soap for a creamy yellow pat of butter, and drizzle brown soap over it to look like maple syrup. (The Coal soap is from waaaay back when I first started the business – they were little black square soaps scented in licorice and packaged in a small organza bag for gift giving.) I think I’ll scent the pancake soaps lightly with vanilla (I never ventured into dough-type scents) and I have a brown sugar FO that smells a lot like maple. I’ve done several drizzled soaps (Dessert Soap and Splish Splash Duck to name a couple), so I know what can go wrong and how to fix those issues, which helps me feel a lot more confident and excited over this soap. I’ve been doing a lot of research about soap “carving” and fondant tools, and think that I might be able to soften the edges of the pancake soaps with the fondant tools. I just can’t figure out how in the world I’ll manage to package them. They may get some plain ol’ Saran Wrap because I don’t think boxes or bags will fit quite right. I just had to share the excitement. It’s my happy thought right now and has helped keep my spirits up the last few days. I’m crossing my fingers I’ll be able to walk and stand again by the time I get the mold (and a book/CD Rom kit for making your own will, as well as an acne tool – because we all buy such an incredibly odd combination of items *rolling eyes at self*). I really look forward to seeing if I can get pancake soaps to turn out and it’ll be interesting to see what challenges pop up while trying.

I hope you all have a wonderful and sunny weekend! How about we all have a small stack to celebrate Spring trying to come to all of the states? 🙂

Soap Experiments

I did a few experiments yesterday, but right before I was going to post them I developed a severe allergic reaction that landed me in the ER until midnight. The doctors aren’t sure if it was an antibiotic I was on or from touching a new plant yesterday. Thankfully we ruled out an allergy to any ingredients, which was a concern since I was making soaps when the reaction occurred. While I’m on bed rest with my epi pen beside me (and a probable beard brewing under my skin from all of these steroids lol), I want to share my pictures. *smile*

I’m not overly happy with the experiments with the decoration soaps, but it’s a learning process. I had some troubles “gluing” the decorations and my tremor resulted in a few wonky angles. Lol. My tremor was particularly strong because of the allergic reaction, but some is just part of my illness, so I’ll have to figure out how to work around that. I absolutely love the little button decorations no matter where they land on the soap though! *grin* No matter how I approached cutting the trims they were consistently uneven. Lol. So no judging on the odd lengths and overlaps, please.

20130407-165644.jpg My favorite trim. I even cut one flower out to use as a decoration.

I also worked on a coffee loaf soap. The big base is a mixture of Coffee Beans FO and Hazelnut Cappuccino FO. Sadly the mouthwatering Hazelnut is so soft that I had to add the Coffee to boost it. The second layer is Coffee Beans with actual ground coffee, for a little bit of gentle exfoliation and texture, although the soap was a little too warm and melted into the bottom a bit, so I suspect there is some ground coffee down in the bottom. Topping it all off is some Buttercream soap frosting. I wanted it really frothy and wild, which took a lot longer than expected. I really like how it looks; the different colors, the wildness of the frosting, and the decadence of it. I am really looking forward to when the frosting is fully set and I can slice it. I think it’ll have more impact when laying down. I’m debating if I should add a dark drizzle, like when you get a mocha at Starbucks. Any thoughts?

Poison Ivy Prevention

While I’m waiting for a soft set on my soap project I thought I’d pop on for a moment. With the weather getting nicer the plants are starting to green up and seeing some vines today reminded me of an easy tip from a PA for Poison Ivy prevention. Until I got married I never paid attention to the “poison” group. Amazingly enough it’s one of the few things that doesn’t affect me (yet), but Larry became really allergic once he hit 35. After getting steroids a few times the PA asked if he had been washing with Dawn Dish Soap after working outside. This caused us both to raise our eyebrows. *grin* She said that replacing your body wash with Dawn (especially orange, but we have experimented with others to test that part) will help strip the oils from your skin, which seriously reduces, if not eliminates, your chances of breaking out. So it may seem a little odd to people when they stay over, open the shower curtain, and among a ton of tester items they find a big bottle of Dawn on the shelf, but he hasn’t had another steroid shot for five years. There have been small break outs, but usually because he was out so long before he showered. Anyway, I wanted to share in case anyone else out there didn’t know this handy tip, but now I need to go whip some soap into submission (okay, okay, into a froth, but that sounded better *grin*).

I’m in love

Ah, Spring is here (well, it forgot to come around my house yet, but the calendar says it’s here) and love is in the air (could be the flu too, but love is way more poetic). And I have a new love. That little silicone fondant mold I bought yesterday is my absolute favorite non-techie item right now. Wanna join for a little “Hallelujah”? *grin* I swore I heard it when I tried the mold out today and the soap was set, and removed, within the hour.

I decide to do the prep work so that I can try decorating soaps tomorrow, so I poured some guest rectangles, the new decoration mold, and even a loaf (more on that later). Since it’s just a test run I didn’t get overly creative on the colors and made it super simple. I thought the decorations would look cute and had a few variations in my mind’s eye, but never imagined them to turn out quite so well.

20130403-231645.jpg
A full view of the decorations

The only real snag I ran into is that those buttons are seriously shallow. As in tip the measuring cup of soap and as soon as soap is near the spout pull up or else they get too full. Almost every one of them has a pretty rounded back, which may be a problem when I try to “glue” them all flat and neat against the bars of soap. I haven’t decided if I am going to cut the wide trims to go around the sides or if I want to use them across the top. I totally love the buttons though. *happy sigh* Here’s a close up…

20130403-232524.jpg

It’s a little cool in the house tonight (I’m too tired to start a fire and it’s hard to get the temperature just right in the kitchen anyway), so the soap started to create a skin a bit sooner than hoped, and a bit of the skin slipped into the really wide trim piece, which is why it’s a little wonky. I really like the cute trim, to the left of the wide piece. Everyone knows I’m not usually into “cute”, but that trim is adorable.

20130403-232808.jpg

I’ll experiment with the decorations on the pink glittery guest rectangles underneath the wax paper. It may be an extra day before I post any examples if they’re too embarrassing. Lol. Just a fair warning.

Last, I decided to pour a quick small loaf using a blend of my coffee FOs (Hazelnut Cappuccino and Coffee Beans). Once it sets I plan to smooth some bath frosting over it and see how little slices look. I may even drizzle a little dark soap, in Hazelnut, over the frosting too.

20130403-233314.jpg I almost added some ground coffee to the soap, for mild exfoliation and because it’s a natural deodorizer, but decided I wanted to try a pretty version first. *grin*

I’m pretty happy with today’s pours. I had an epiphany earlier that if I was still painting instead of making my products, I wouldn’t be so worried about losses and taxes. That realization helped take the pressure off and I’m just going to have fun this year. That made today’s pours really enjoyable and I’m even more excited to try using these decorations. *big smile* I’m crossing my fingers that I have something fun to post tomorrow.

Soap Decorations

I went to Hobby Lobby today while running errands to see if they had any containers that would be just right for the Splish Splash Duck Soaps. Although I didn’t find anything for that I found some really cute fondant molds.

I’ve been eyeing what the wholesaler calls “Deco It” molds. Basically they’re molds with several detailed and shallow patterns. You pour colored soap into the details and when they’re unmolded you “glue” them (with a little soap and alcohol) onto the surface of your main piece of soap, making it quite impressive. You can make a simple square soap into a package, scatter flowers all about, or put a fancy little border around your soap. I’ve been itching to try this since they came out on one of my wholesaler’s sites, but couldn’t justify the cost.

While looking at the fondant tools (you’d be amazed how many things can be repurposed for soap) I saw their fondant molds and realized that the “Deco It” molds are really just these fondant molds. *grin* Plus, they’re a bit cheaper, too. *small happy dance* I had a really hard time deciding, but even Larry liked this one, so I got a really cute mold.

20130402-235756.jpg

The trim could be really cute across the top of a bar or along the border of a guest round, while I think soap buttons would be one of the cutest additions for a kid’s soap. Larry thinks the bow might be neat as an embedded soap, too. I’m so anxious to try these decorations out. I hope I have some examples to share soon, but couldn’t resist showing you.

I hope you have a great night and a happy Wednesday!

Queue the dirge

I admit that I’m morbid enough that I have the funeral march as a ringtone. I’m not in that honest of a mood to confess who earned that tone, but I have it and played it today in honor of the poor Worms in Dirt Soap. I think I’ve exhausted my troubleshooting abilities and have to call the code on it. *sad smile*

The last batch of Worm soaps have been sitting at room temperature, exposed, to make sure that they would be fine once at the consumer’s. I dreaded checking them today while working on stuff. I honestly did, with good reason. Every day something else has gone wonky or wrong and today was no different. Now the color on the worms is bleeding into the soap. Lol. I am out of solutions. I have been bested. *hits the ring tone again while hanging my head* I admit that I’ve learned a lot between them and the ducks, so it was worth it. It was a damn fine idea if I say so myself. *smile*

Ah, yes, I mentioned the ducks too…I have tried every bag that I own for packaging the ducks. Nope. I’ve had them wrapped in wax paper and big zip bags while trying to figure it out, and thankfully nothing has gone wrong with them…yet. *smart aleck wink* I decided that I have to give up the idea of bagging the ducks and tying them off with some curling ribbon though. I hate to raise the prices of anything, as you well know, but I’m going to have to add the fifty cents each box cost me and stick to boxing them. (Of course I won’t charge that to orders I all ready have, although I have no idea where to write that down for the accountant, so I guess I’ll write a note and staple it to my 2013 tax worksheet for her to figure out. Mawahahaha!) I feel a bit silly because I have taped these boxes to high heaven to try to keep the soaps as fresh as I can and it kind of feels like I’m diapering the poor things. *cracking up* Seriously! Just look at the picture! The boxes have to be folded and assembled. It seems like an origami diaper. *shaking head in amusement*

20130315-171712.jpg

Anyway, thank you for sharing in a moment of mourning the poor worms. *grin* I never expected to ever write that…hmm. I best get out of my reclining camp chair, soaking up a bit of rare incredible weather, and craft some ducks. I hope you have some beautiful weather to enjoy this weekend and have a fun, yet safe, St. Patrick’s Day.

Weird “Worms”

I checked on my soaps today (they’ve been relaxing in some wax paper) to make sure everything is still going fine after a few days. Unfortunately I found one of the weirdest things that I’ve seen since first experimenting with bath stuff years back. I knew that there was a risk of an air bubble around the shads in the Dirt soap when I decided to keep them upright and the tippy top breached the surface. Yesterday there was the tiny hole, but today it’s as if the soaps completely changed. I suspect that the shads dried out and shrunk a little, because there is an air bubble completely surrounding each shad. That is kind of understandable and although the presentation won’t be as nice, it’s an easy fix with just laying them down when I embed them and using these for shreds or whatnot. The weird part is that each of them sweated.

We’re still experiencing winter temperatures and I work in a room away from the woodstove, so the temperature doesn’t get overly warm during the winter, and it hasn’t been a long time, so I’m a bit puzzled right now. A soap “sweat” is not pretty to look at, but is still completely useable. Glycerin is a humectant, which draws moisture from the air, so the surface gets a bumpy white or a beaded surface texture. I realize that the sweat around the shad is because of the soak and apparently not enough time to dry out, although they sure seemed like they were. I’m just absolutely puzzled over it having stripes of sweat. *shaking head* Thankfully it’s only the one variety of soap, but I need to do some research obviously. I guess it’s good that I have been waiting a few days to check on it before posting to my site. I’m going to experiment with a difference base and see if that’s what went wrong. Cross your fingers please!

I’d Love to Hear Your Ideas

I’m kind of stumped and would love to hear some ideas, pretty please. I’ll share my chocolate with you. Well, virtually, but the thought is there! *grin* I totally love the Worms in Dirt name, but realize that the shads/tadpoles can’t really masquerade under that name. I’ll forever be confusing customers and myself by asking if they really want a worm or the other. Sooo…Any ideas on a good name for them? I’m torn on keeping Dirt in the name, but my creativity is broken now apparently and I’m at a loss. Lol. Larry tried to be helpful, but Shads in Mud doesn’t sound too whimsical or…well…pleasant. *grin* Off on a tangent I’ll mention that I was trying to decide what pics to use to go on my site and Pinterest, which I still haven’t decided on, and the “tadpole” (can’t help myself) reminded me of a shark swimming around in the side view. Anyway, I appreciate any and all ideas!! At $2 each I think they could be a good little novelty item and want to start marketing. 😉

So you don’t have to scroll to the previous post, here are the little creepers. *grin*
