Logo and other fine details

Who knew that deciding on a logo would be harder than finding the perfect pair of shoes? *grin* Clip art or a thumbnail of one of my most appealing products? An elegant font, something whimsical, or something no one can ever say is hard for them to read? With head to toe hives right now I don’t feel comfortable touching product or equipment, so I’m doing all of this logo and packaging research instead. I know I’m not contagious, but still! Ew! I’ll stick to the tech and research side today and just let all of my sauciness show.

I realized while surfing through dozens of e-how articles and business site posts about logos that my packaging and labeling got a bit boring and stuffy. They reflect a little too much of the blah side of me. *grin*

What cries out “me” yet makes it stand out for all of the “you”s out there? So I’m going to spend a few days trying on the different logo “shoes” until I find the perfect pair to make my butt look dag on fine. *grin* Can’t tell that I’m in a cheeky mood, can you?

I can proudly report that I finally made up my mind on the creature for the Monsters Away Spray pictures. I’m going for a piñata. I’m going to be able to make it “float” then and not be scary. *happy dance* I admit that I kind of love that idea.

So I’m going to check the Monster off of the planning spreadsheet and go troll the printer companies a bit more. *grin* Can you imagine if we could earn frequent flyer miles for trolling businesses? I’d be in Scotland determined to help the hot Scots in kilts (because they’re all Gerard Butler clones that would be perfect in every historical romance novel, you know) see how much my goat’s milk lotion could help their skin after I helped them sample it. In fitting with that naughty thought here’s a pic of the apron I’m going to get and wear when I’m making product. *flirty wiggle of the eyebrows while humming “I need a hero”…*

20130408-215332.jpg I can use it for a background when I’m feeling particularly…um…in need of an eye-catching picture background 😉

Poison Ivy Prevention

While I’m waiting for a soft set on my soap project I thought I’d pop on for a moment. With the weather getting nicer the plants are starting to green up and seeing some vines today reminded me of an easy tip from a PA for Poison Ivy prevention. Until I got married I never paid attention to the “poison” group. Amazingly enough it’s one of the few things that doesn’t affect me (yet), but Larry became really allergic once he hit 35. After getting steroids a few times the PA asked if he had been washing with Dawn Dish Soap after working outside. This caused us both to raise our eyebrows. *grin* She said that replacing your body wash with Dawn (especially orange, but we have experimented with others to test that part) will help strip the oils from your skin, which seriously reduces, if not eliminates, your chances of breaking out. So it may seem a little odd to people when they stay over, open the shower curtain, and among a ton of tester items they find a big bottle of Dawn on the shelf, but he hasn’t had another steroid shot for five years. There have been small break outs, but usually because he was out so long before he showered. Anyway, I wanted to share in case anyone else out there didn’t know this handy tip, but now I need to go whip some soap into submission (okay, okay, into a froth, but that sounded better *grin*).

Gauntlet Link

I wanted to share the link to the blog that inspired me that I discussed in my earlier post. Not only is it an enjoyable quick read and helps this blogger get more exposure, it might just inspire you to accept the challenge. If you decide to, please let me know and keep me posted as you go. Having a workout buddy is helpful and I think that concept applies well to this challenge. If you need help setting up a free blog to document your challenge, don’t hesitate to contact me. Maybe if everyone participating in the challenge reached out and helps another, then we might all get an extra benefit of connecting with others. 🙂

Cocoa Moisturizing Massage Melts

*stops dancing mid-rump shake, blushing from being caught* I thought it might take you a little longer to get to Part 2, so I was doing a little happy dance while looking at my little army of melts on the cabinet. I knew I should have stuck with a cool and casual head bob to my favorite song by Fun.

Anyway, I finally got to try making massage melts and I’m really excited over them. Unfortunately the melts are taking forever (queue the teenage dramatic eye roll of “this is so lame”) to set up. I, um, kind of made a really gross looking blob out of one tester when I tried to unmold it a little bit ago. Lol. Looks were definitely deceiving. Soon, my friends, I will post my deliciously scented finished product, but in the meantime I’ll share the process.

The Cocoa Moisturizing Massage Melts are basically a chocolate snack to your body. Instead of nibbling on that piece of Dove or that Easter chocolate rabbit that you hid behind the sofa cushion to attack rabidly when PMS hits, you actually do want this chocolate to go to the hips…or elbows, back, etc, and I want to test it on freshly shaved legs. I started with dark cocoa powder (rich in antioxidants); then added beeswax granules, grated cocoa butter, sweet almond oil, and I boosted the divine scent just a bit more with some Fudge Brownie FO. *happy sigh* I wish I could bottle the resulting smell for those raving lunatic, must-have-chocolate-or-someone-will-die, days. Lol.

I admit that it was the first time that I ever grated cocoa butter. I can’t even think of how to adequately describe the weirdness of how it melts in the hand while being grated, so my hand looked so oily. I couldn’t decide if I should let my mind play in the gutter over it or if I should wrinkle my nose and go all “eww” over it. *grin*

20130331-010218.jpg

In a double boiler (well, my generic version anyway lol) I mixed everything together. It looked really odd at first.

20130331-010349.jpg

20130331-010412.jpg

20130331-010435.jpg

It took me a while to get the heat just right for everything to melt. Beeswax granules are easier to handle and supremely easy to measure, but I had a hard time getting them to melt. As things began to melt and blend I was reminded of chocolate pudding.

20130331-010655.jpg

Suddenly everything was just right when I dipped the spoon in again to watch how the mixture dripped and I had to work fast when I turned the burner off. The mixture was poured into a large measuring cup to make it easier to pour and then I immediately poured into my guest squares mold. I had a little extra scraped from the edges of the bowl and cup that wasn’t as nice and creamy, since it’d been off of the heat a few minutes at this point, which I got into a couple of small molds to use as testers. I still think of chocolate pudding when I look at the melts.

20130331-011134.jpg

We tested what was left on the spatula and took “control” pictures to see how it will change with time, etc. My husband didn’t quite expect to be a tester. I suddenly walked up to him and smeared it down one of his legs while he was laying in the recliner. *cracking up* There were a few fun comments made, but then I think he started to enjoy the spontaneous leg rub. Next he got it tested on a hand and then I had him test it on my back, so we’d have several ranges of skin in the test. There was a bit of trouble with the cocoa leaving a slight tint when massaged into body hair, like manly leg hair. *grin* I’m going to keep checking it periodically and even seeing if it’ll rub in further with time. The patch on my arm and then the one on the elbow are both incredibly silky five or six hours later. The secondary, and most important, test is to see how the melts perform after they’ve set up. We have a baseline of expectations and I’m super anxious to get them un-molded.

So that I’m not tempted to poke the melts until they are set up (yep, I’m that kind of person that pokes jello and bruises lol), I’m going to go lay down and savor the lingering smell of chocolate. I can’t wait to share more about them with you soon!

The Challenge and Melts

This may turn into a two part post – it just depends how many words I can cram in under the limit…I mean *cough* how concise I can be. *grin* My strength was always in creative writing and not journalism, mostly because I love descriptions that wrap around you like your favorite fuzzy blanket, instead of a straight shooting line that smacks you between the eyes. *smile* Anyway, I reserve the right to continue this post because I have lots of ideas to share right now.

While I was really sick (actually only now am I starting to feel like a human again instead of a casing for phlegm – ewww, gross alert! *grin*) I caught up on some reading. I’m sure you probably know that I love to read and that it understandably means that I follow a lot of blogs. For awhile I had to prioritize and missed out on some blog posts. Well, one of my catch ups is on The Jackie Blog. I think this blogger is really engaging and I’m impressed that she has issued The Gauntlet to help motivate others to improve their lives. She’s accomplished a lot with her personal challenges and is really inspiring to me, especially because she’s honest and forthright about not wanting to do stuff some days. The challenge is to pick something in your life to improve that is quantifiable, for at least 30 days, and she has some incentives as well, although all participants will have the benefit of improvement no matter what. Well, I decided that I’d really like to apply the challenge to my business. Although I think about the business a lot and do a lot of research, I haven’t felt overly productive or successful lately, and I’m hoping that dedicated time with a little tough love will help both my feelings about my business as well as the business itself. So, although the challenge officially starts April 1st, I’m giving it a go now. We all know I’m not patient when I have an idea. *grin*

I totally nerded out and made an outline of goals to accomplish during the challenge, as well as a few other items to work on or consider. It’s a little sad to think about (let alone say) that I’m going to be removing some products from my line strictly because they don’t sell. My husband got a few extra days off and we couch potato-ed to help me recuperate, plus spend time together. Anyway, one show we caught up on with the DVR is Shark Tank. It’s one of those hate to love it shows for us. *grin* Just my luck one of the applicants was a young girl who is creating and selling homemade scrubs. She has a few variations of them, but that’s all. Of course Larry keyed in on that business model and said that I need to apply it to mine. “You need to focus on one or two items that actually sell instead of so many options that don’t always sell.” I understand, I totally do, and I know how he is looking at it. However, you have to have a bit of variety and change in order to find what is a perfect fit for the business and fills someone’s needs. I set my feelings aside and decided that I’d compromise by restructuring a bit, and I’ll also keep experimenting, but I’ll try to keep the new items under the main lines now.

I admit that this is a bit scary and kind of sad to revamp the business. The bad side of homemade sometimes is that every creative item has a little piece of your heart and hopes mixed in, so when they are unsuccessful you feel a bit emotional about it. However I am going to pull my big girl boots on and make bigger, and better, tracks for my business to step into.

First, several items that have never sold or seldom sell will be completely removed. I’ll have my friendly line reminding customers to please inquire if you don’t see what you’re looking for, because I may still be able to make that item, but I’m losing money by having them available full time.

Second, I’m going to come up with a brand logo that will go with the company name and product title on the main label. I’ll also probably add a label to the back for the “do not eat”, which will help to make the product label much more interesting and professional. That girl on Shark Tank had some really adorable packaging and a cute label. I know it’ll take some work and may not be finished within the month challenge, but it is a key priority to me, and one goal of the challenge that I’m really excited about.

Third, I need to finalize and implement the concept of “As Supplies Last”. I’ll use that for trying out my experiments and things that won’t be made any more, but I still have stuff on hand. I’ll see if the new items sell well and if they do, then they make it to a standard page of my website. If items don’t sell or ideas fall flat, they get a reduced price and will be removed once appropriate. It will be a lot easier than having to dedicate fluctuating space on my standard pages when they’re set up fairly well right now.

Fourth, I really want to do a sale. Larry thinks it needs to be labeled as a liquidation sale, which in my opinion is what the As Supplies Last page really is. I want to do a flash sale. I have a few real reasons behind this idea – I personally love to shop them so why wouldn’t others, I can control the time frame, I can possibly do high volume at a more discounted price for a limited time which will still make me more than slowly selling off a few at the moderate liquidation sale price, and lastly, it may generate some interest and excitement. When I’m excited about something it comes bubbling out of my mouth any time that the conversation goes idle, and if anyone else gets that excited, maybe they’ll spread the word to their friends and I’ll get some new sales.

Lastly, I have some smaller goals such as working on gift giving/boxing options that make the products even more attractive, better marketing, and some good ol’ tedious work like changing some names, editing my site, getting improved pictures to use in marketing, and whatnot.

I think I have a few months of work outlined, plus my work on trying some new items. I have the supplies on hand, so when I get a creative urge, I’m going for it. *grin* I hope to do a few featured ingredient posts to help everyone know a little bit more about a cool item and I have a few little summer recipes that I will share. They use perishable ingredients, so I can’t sell them, but I think some will appreciate them, even if they only get to the recipe via Pinterest. If there is something you would like me to write about, such as a specific ingredient or product, or whatever, please drop a comment and I’ll add it to my outline. Periodically I’ll share my overall challenge status with you, because that will help motivate me when I don’t feel well. I’ll be held a bit more accountable, even if you don’t honestly give two figs if I succeed at the challenge. Just acknowledging the challenge and putting that into the forever zone of the Internet…that helps me feel more accountable than when it’s just for my eyes only. *grin*

Now, I also mentioned melts, which is something I’ve been impatiently waiting to discuss, but I’m running out of space, so I’m taking the allowance I gave myself earlier and making a second post to accompany this. I’ll see you on the other side of the post. *big grin*

Worms and Ducks

It was an interesting hour and a half working on soaps today. I learned that I can only make one Splish Splash Duck Soap at a time after about twenty pours (so many that hours later I still have “prune” fingers lol), torn and broken “splashes”, a soap puddle that covered half the counter (nope, not telling how that happened, I’m still peeved over that *grin*), I wore out a sheet of wax paper from pulling soap off of it so many times while shaping (a first!), and even a bit too much blue dripped out of the bottle. *sigh* I have one soap almost completed after all of this. *cracking up* A lot of lessons learned and I’m proud that I had that many troubleshooting ideas that it took me that long to exhaust them.

I soaked the worms and tadpoles for two hours to make sure they were clean and to remove the odd rubber smell they have. Well, um, after I rinsed them they still smelled like fresh work boots, so they’re soaking again after a brief I’m trying a half ML of FO in the solution to remove the funk. I used Bubblegum instead of the Dirt since that probably would have just made it even weirder. No matter what I know there’s nothing actually wrong or unsafe, and after they sit in soap a while no one will ever know. (Curse my honestly and decision to share the bad moments too! *grin*) I admit though that it amused me so much to see the critters bobbing around and looking creeptastic that I had to take a picture. *grin* The morbid side of me couldn’t resist poking them a few times. Lol. Hopefully they’re just as fun when a bit of a worm is poking out of the soap after some use.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring a picture of improved ducks or wicked worm soaps. *grin* In the meantime I’m going to disinfect and then play in the worms a bit more.

Photo Op Idea

In one of my happy dazes I suddenly had the mental image of a girl with an overly dramatic “scared face” spritzing Monsters Away Spray on some odd looking made up monster. I don’t usually go for shtick, but I can’t get that picture out of my head and I think that would be a lot more interesting than a picture of the bottle. I mean, a plain Jane bottle doesn’t really make you wonder what is being sold or really draw you in. Maybe I need to make the pics promoting my products more interesting and creative, instead of just giving the goods. What do you think? I’m not sure on the age for the child in the pic, plus it depends on if any moms are cool with their child being a model (unnamed for privacy of course). I think younger might be better, since they’re the ones the spray is for, plus most of the younger ones are more willing to ham it up and overact the expressions. *grin* If I do the pic should it be some weird, oddly constructed, monster or should it be them spraying under the bed, into the closet, or something else that represents the scary stuff lurking in the dark? Even if I never use the pic(s) for the business, the idea sure makes me grin, so it’s staying in my idea brainstorming app as a happy thought. As always, any input is greatly appreciated!! Well, even more than usual, since really I’m asking for opinions in case I’m still a little too off kilter for normal thinking. *grin* Hmmm, first time I ever tried implying that I’m normal. Maybe I should check with the voices to get their thoughts too. I’m not so sure they’ll be happy with my fibbing about being normal at some point. 😉

Sweet, Spicy, and Sexy

I’m really glad that you can’t see me when I’m writing posts.  Pajamas aside, I still sit and fiddle with each item like a kid with their new toy.  *grin*  I think I may have to see an addiction specialist at some point, since I huff FOs like a coke addict.  *cracking up*  This really has to be the last batch of new scents I buy because I am honestly out of space.  I have filled an entire shelf on my massive business stand.  I’ll never use all of these before they expire and that’s a lot of money sitting on one shelf!  I’m glad that I snuck these in before making that rule for myself.

One of my cats knocked over the bottle of Hot Stuff FO, so I’ve had 24 hours of it on my hands, always with me, blocking all other smells.  As horrible as that could be, it’s kind of like I’m draped all over some hot guy that spent some time making himself smell good before I came over to watch some movies.  (I miss those days sometimes.  Someone actually made an effort to rock my world then.  *grin*  I enjoy the freedom of a PJ filled existence, but when I try to go the extra mile, then I really want those sweet and sexy moments of dating that we took for granted.)  Back to our regularly scheduled program…this FO is so freaking sexy that it actually beats Edward’s Kiss.  I know, I’m shocked too!  *sassy wink*  There’s peppercorn, deep and heavy amber, a touch of cinnamon that you don’t often catch unless you’re really huffing (*looks out the window with an innocent look*), and the wholesaler lists a note of cashmere.  I admit that I have no idea what cashmere is suppose to smell like or really what it adds, but it sounds great.  Lol.  I would swear that there’s leather in it, but it may just be the amber.  I dabbed it on my dryer sheet and the laundry smells all sexy now.  *grin*

Oooh La La FO is the chocolate covered strawberries scent I told you about when I ordered it.  I’m not totally sold on this one, so I think I will make some soap and let them sit a few days, then see how it smells.  It’s really not much better than the version I came up with, which is rather disappointing.  It has that bottled, plastic flatness that I try to avoid.  I hope that the chocolate develops some richer notes as it sets in the products.  *crossing fingers*

Lastly I got Sugar & Spice FO.  I’m not really sure which, but this FO reminds me of another one.  It’s annoying the tarnation out of me that I can’t put my finger on it, but that’s life, right?  *smile*  It makes me think of the gourmet cotton candy that I’ve seen on Food Network (i.e. the food porn channel).  Overly sweet sugary goodness with a hint of spices.  The wholesaler lists coriander and cardamom, but my official description is spicy yumminess.  Lol.  It’s a fun scent, but not the ooey gooey umptiousness of the usual baking FOs that I gravitate to when I want a food scent.  There’s a slight impression of bright perfume, but that may change after it’s mixed into product bases.

Overall I’m glad that I didn’t rush into these for Valentine’s Day, but I’m really happy with two of them.  The other is an opportunity to play mad scientist, I figure.  *grin*  For now I’ll enjoy sniffing the sugar and spice from one hand and the wanna-jump-him sexiness on the other.  😉

My latest goodies

My flash sale goodies were delivered and I tell you that an outsider would have thought it was my birthday the way I oohed and aahed over the stuff. *grin* Larry was rather grumpy about lugging the huge box in, but that’s what a man’s there for, right? *teasing wink* I was able to restock some of the boring ingredients, but there were a few really fun items that I can’t wait to share.

First off, I must confess that as anti-girly as I can be, I love the color pink. Lol. I love almost all shades of it and in a few weeks we’re going to paint my walker hot pink. It’s sad and pathetic, isn’t it? *grin* Anyway, it’s rather hard to get a bright shade of pink in soap when you’re using regular dyes. Due to the incredible price I was able to afford to splurge on the wholesaler’s featured neon pink powdered dye. They say it won’t bleed or fade. Woohoo!
hot pink dye

The picture isn’t so great, but they had the orifice reducers in stock and I’m so excited to try it. (My phone’s camera is not focusing so well today *pout*) I didn’t twist the reducer in, since supposedly they won’t come back out, plus this helps you see how it works. It was a facepalming moment, but I admit that I hadn’t figured out how they’d stay in without having to change lids or get other attachments.

Orifice Reducers

Orifice Reducers

I’ve been looking forward to making the cocoa massage melts that I mentioned awhile back and decided to make it a lot easier on myself by getting beeswax in granules. I have a brick of beeswax, I admit, but I read that these are easier to measure and melt, so being the ingredient hoarder that I am, I ordered some to try. *grin* Sorry about the stripe of packaging in the picture, but the camera couldn’t focus on the beeswax, so I needed to help it focus. Aren’t they just so cute?

Beeswax

Beeswax

I have mixed feelings on the goldfish and small cello bags. Basically the goldfish will be embedded in “water” soap in the bag, then the bag gets a twist tie, just like when you win a fish at the fair. First off, the bags are way smaller than I thought. (Remember my previous confession – measurements and dimensions are totally lost on me. Lol.)I was concerned about how expensive the soaps would be because I thought there would be a lot of soap for the water, so being small will really help with that, but I’m not totally sure they will be big enough to actually remind people of the fair prizes. Second, the goldfish are not only pretty small, but those eyes are kind of creepy. *grin* Is it just me or do they seem like they’re bulging? It reminds me of that horrible golfish out of water commercial about asthma attacks that always made me want to put the tv in the water. (Hey, I never said all of my thoughts and compulsions made sense to anyone else!)

Fishies!

Fishies!

Next I get to discuss the new FOs. *rubbing hands together with glee*

Like a Duck to Water

I’m so excited over a soap that I can’t wait until later in the day (it’s almost 2:30 AM here lol). I had a short boost of energy resulting from getting out today and took advantage of it to experiment (again) on a duck soap.

Larry liked the wet look to the 4th ducky in the batch I experimented on a few days ago. We both agreed that the shredded soap just doesn’t fit my mad scientist personality. He asked me why couldn’t I do the extra pour around the soap and then turn it upside down, using that as the duck cupping side. I took that idea a bit further and used wax paper in shapes to let me control the soap a little better. I was able to get the “water” soap to look like it was really splashing and I did a second pour with different crinkles in the paper, so there are some almost lacy-like edges to some of the “water”. *smile so wide I may crack my lips* A little shred made it into my opal-like soap round, so there’s a tiny pink spot on the inside, but that’s covered by the ducky. The first pic is the first water splash (and you can see that annoying little accident), the second is at half of the second stage, and the third is the cutie patootie result, sitting on my hand. The skin tone helped the ice blue water really pop in the pic, so I am even happier. If people like these I think I can do a few “At the Fair” variations of duck soaps to go in the Easter and summer kid combos.
