Sampling

One of the top items on my list is to find a better way of marketing. One part of that includes more efficient sampling. I’m a strong believer that if you try something, then you’re more likely to buy it. I found a little packet that can be sealed with a flat iron. It’s really cost effective, so I could easily budget a fairly high quantity of them. My business card can be stapled right onto the packets too. To open you just tear it open, like ripping open a hot cocoa packet.

The second option is the flip top jars that I used for the testers at my booth at the Christmas craft fair last year. These would be perfect because they’re resealable, transported easily even after being opened, and will hold the true scent well. They also look more professional in some ways.

20130418-013203.jpg

Down side to the packets is that once they’re open, they’re open, because they’re not resealable, so the whole sample must be marketed right then. They’re cheaper to make though, so I can do a few of each for other moments of sampling.

Down side to the jars is that someone might like my product and walk off with the little jar, which has a bigger amount of sample in it. It also is a little more expected, I guess you could say. It says handmade lotion instead of high end sample. I don’t mind either of those impressions though, so it’s definitely not a con for either. Lol.

After looking over my lists over areas that I can improve marketing is one of the biggest and I think really doing a lot more sampling, not just my testers, will help. Maybe if I get a lot of samples in hands, like Avon or Mary Kay can, then maybe they’ll be able to see that my best items might compare to their favorites. Plus, the real samples will give true examples of my incredible scents instead of the unpredictable scent of a soaked cotton ball. A small sample of my bright and fresh summer scents might find their groove then. *grin*

Anyway, if you like one over the other, please post your vote in the comments. I appreciate any and all feedback. I want to tweak the business just right that my customers really like all aspects of it. 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful day/night!

Between the uneven lines

Having dedicated time daily to work on business things has gotten to the point that I’m working on troubleshooting now that I may have been procrastinating on. *whistling innocently* I’m really trying to emphasize the “may” in that. Lol. I’m pretty proud that I’ve been thinking outside of the box and gotten some things checked off of the spreadsheet.

I am flawed. There’s something seriously weird about me (beyond my engaging eccentric personality of course). I can’t see things straight. Maybe that lift in one eyelid is the culprit, or maybe it comes down to missing this gene’s handout. Maybe they had a seminar on it with the group that gives out a sense of direction. Lol. Enough lame moments that amuse me – but seriously, when things are all wonky and a coffee cup could slide off a table, that’s when it looks level to me. Once a month or so Larry goes through the house with a level and straightens up all of the things I’ve straightened while fidgeting. An uneven position, especially a picture among others, drives me bonkers, so the Type A in me requires that I try to tap up the low corner. Apparently what I see as level is a few degrees off. *grin* Anyway, I confess this embarrassing lacking trait because it affects my business a bit. There’s a reason why I don’t often sell soaps that require cutting for a final result. I can measure with a ruler, make notches every inch to show where to cut, etc. Somehow my wonky eyes get involved there, too, and I end up with some seriously oddly cut soaps. Lol. Last night I picked this on my list to trouble shoot. Obviously I’m not able to fix this, so I needed an idea of how to adapt my processes to have the necessary result. Well, graphs don’t lie. *sigh of nerdy delight* I got a packet of grid worksheets that I can use as cutting guides then and it’ll be nearly impossible to cut wrong then, because I have four points to line up, which prevents me from creating an invisible line to follow. Booyah! *nerdy boogie* Now I can cut up my coffee loaf!

My second problem solving issue got solved at the same time, because I bought a package of white poster boards while getting the grid papers. Now I have a quick, easy, and clean photography background. I read an article about other items pulling attention from what you’re trying to sell, so maybe if I use these and not floral cloth backgrounds the items will pop a bit more. 2 down, a dozen to go.

I also tested a chunk of the coffee loaf and some of the decorations I made with the fondant mold. I have Fibromyalgia and it honestly makes me the best tester to make sure that products can’t hurt someone, like will button soap decorations hurt if they’re used against the body instead of a washcloth. Being touched at all can cause long lasting pain sometimes, so I figure that if a rough soap doesn’t make me pull back, then I can be really happy with a soap. Although the buttons and most especially the ribbon decorations felt a little odd when rubbed directly on the skin, they didn’t hurt, so I’m clearing them to be sellable. The cocoa loaf soap needs a few more days of testing. The first time I mostly got the frosting, which felt awesome, like the fat girl in me finally decided to smear cupcakes all over myself. *cracking up* The second test gave more of the exfoliating coffee level exposed and that was pretty nice and wasn’t overwhelming, so I’m tickled pink over this success. I need to decide on the scent performance at the third use, since I should be able to use all three sections on the one side now.

I’m pretty stoked that I’ve gotten most of the price changes done and applied most of the desired changes to my website. I have a little more left and lastly I’ve started working on updating recipes to fit within the new guidelines for fragrance ingredients. I have so much accomplished all ready at just the half way mark of the challenge and am really excited about tackling the remaining short-term challenges.

One big one still on the to do is to figure out some marketing that would work for me and with my limitations. That’s definitely on the long-term goals list. I’m hoping that my happy brain storming with the graph paper, cutting pieces from the coffee loaf, will allow more creative juices to slip forward and give me a hallelujah moment. *grin*

I’m thinking about posting a DIY recipe (ingredients are finally available and in season) or maybe I do some ingredient highlights. Hopefully I’ll have an extra bump of decision making when I have my hallelujah moment. 😉 *starts humming “I Need A Hero”….*

Cleaning Up

I’ve spent the last few days doing the small things that tend to get put off and working on revamping my site.

I actually attempted to try to work on products yesterday. You would have had a guilty moment from laughing until you were crying if you’d seen me. *grin* As the heavy duty medications are wearing off I have the shakes so bad and it is really amusing to see how much falls off or sloshes out when I try to do something right now. Just trying to cut the coffee loaf was absolutely hilarious. A part of me actually still has a little self respect, so I’m not posting pictures, but the end of the loaf looks like a two year old drummed on it with a butter knife. *cracking up* I tried to measure out and cut the loaf into pieces, but kept having a “stuttering” kind of problem. So I guess I’ll be testing a lot more of it than I originally intended. Lol.

Thankfully the Type A personality took a seat for awhile and I ignored that feeling that I had to have some huge accomplishment, and did the other stuff. Despite the delays I got my quarterly taxes figured and filed (on time still *performs a short jig*), redid my order worksheet (beyond overdo really), and then started the housekeeping on my site. It actually felt really good to start removing some stuff from the site. When I’d written my list I admittedly got a little emotional over deciding which ones were getting sent out to pasture. That’s all my own issues and know part of it is, again, having to admit that some ideas that I get excited about aren’t sound for my business right now. So it surprised me that when I started deleting text boxes from the site I actually felt better. It’s kind of like a spring cleaning for my mind too. *smile* It’ll probably be a few days before the “While Supplies Last” page debuts since I can only sit for brief periods of time so far, but I’m pretty excited. Hopefully if you’re doing spring cleaning you can enjoy your version as much as I’m enjoying mine.

Before I lean the recliner back I thought I’d mention that I’m definitely going to have to reconsider the cocoa melts. They’re bagged, but they’re getting so cracked and dry looking that they’re not presentable. Lol. Dang it…more chocolate for me. A cocoa massage while I nibble my last hidden chocolate bunny. Ahhh…. 😉

A Much Needed Realization

I came to a kind of sad decision after a lot of research and thinking. I spent so much time fiddling with the concept of a logo and I honestly don’t think it’s going to work for me.

As much as a really snazzy label that catches the eye makes me feel a little warm and fuzzy, I think I’m focusing on the wrong things. One of the things that I am so proud of is that I work really hard to keep the price point low. A logo would result in another label, adding cost to every product, even if I fully design and print them myself. I’d rather stay a little boring and keep the costs level, especially when costs are going up every where you turn.

I spent several hours last night looking at packaging options to see if I could find a cost effective option there instead. Um, buh me. Lol. One, if I use tissue paper, cigar bands, or that extra label for a logo, then you can’t see the product, which kind of seems a bit illogical to me. Users like the goat’s milk lotion because it works and a dollar’s worth of shiny paper isn’t going to make the product better. Granted it might get a few more people to stop and look at it, but that’s not what my little business is about. Now that was a bit of an eye opening moment. I know, I know, it sounds so thoroughly dramatic, but I’m being completely honest. I truly want to be able to help people in some way and share some of the fun things I’m learning or discovering. I can totally justify (and enjoy!) wrapping baskets and combos, and what not, but not individual products.

I feel like a lot of time got wasted, but maybe it was worth it to take a long look at what I need to focus on. As much as the bells and whistles are fun to look at and think about, and even exciting, my original slogan needs to remain my main focus, and I just needed to get back in touch with that. “Pampering with natural benefits” is definitely more important to me, and offering a handmade product at as low a price as possible, than the incredibly adorable add ons. Time to get my nerd on and make a new spreadsheet of goals. 😉

Logo and other fine details

Who knew that deciding on a logo would be harder than finding the perfect pair of shoes? *grin* Clip art or a thumbnail of one of my most appealing products? An elegant font, something whimsical, or something no one can ever say is hard for them to read? With head to toe hives right now I don’t feel comfortable touching product or equipment, so I’m doing all of this logo and packaging research instead. I know I’m not contagious, but still! Ew! I’ll stick to the tech and research side today and just let all of my sauciness show.

I realized while surfing through dozens of e-how articles and business site posts about logos that my packaging and labeling got a bit boring and stuffy. They reflect a little too much of the blah side of me. *grin*

What cries out “me” yet makes it stand out for all of the “you”s out there? So I’m going to spend a few days trying on the different logo “shoes” until I find the perfect pair to make my butt look dag on fine. *grin* Can’t tell that I’m in a cheeky mood, can you?

I can proudly report that I finally made up my mind on the creature for the Monsters Away Spray pictures. I’m going for a piñata. I’m going to be able to make it “float” then and not be scary. *happy dance* I admit that I kind of love that idea.

So I’m going to check the Monster off of the planning spreadsheet and go troll the printer companies a bit more. *grin* Can you imagine if we could earn frequent flyer miles for trolling businesses? I’d be in Scotland determined to help the hot Scots in kilts (because they’re all Gerard Butler clones that would be perfect in every historical romance novel, you know) see how much my goat’s milk lotion could help their skin after I helped them sample it. In fitting with that naughty thought here’s a pic of the apron I’m going to get and wear when I’m making product. *flirty wiggle of the eyebrows while humming “I need a hero”…*

20130408-215332.jpg I can use it for a background when I’m feeling particularly…um…in need of an eye-catching picture background 😉

I’m in love

Ah, Spring is here (well, it forgot to come around my house yet, but the calendar says it’s here) and love is in the air (could be the flu too, but love is way more poetic). And I have a new love. That little silicone fondant mold I bought yesterday is my absolute favorite non-techie item right now. Wanna join for a little “Hallelujah”? *grin* I swore I heard it when I tried the mold out today and the soap was set, and removed, within the hour.

I decide to do the prep work so that I can try decorating soaps tomorrow, so I poured some guest rectangles, the new decoration mold, and even a loaf (more on that later). Since it’s just a test run I didn’t get overly creative on the colors and made it super simple. I thought the decorations would look cute and had a few variations in my mind’s eye, but never imagined them to turn out quite so well.

20130403-231645.jpg
A full view of the decorations

The only real snag I ran into is that those buttons are seriously shallow. As in tip the measuring cup of soap and as soon as soap is near the spout pull up or else they get too full. Almost every one of them has a pretty rounded back, which may be a problem when I try to “glue” them all flat and neat against the bars of soap. I haven’t decided if I am going to cut the wide trims to go around the sides or if I want to use them across the top. I totally love the buttons though. *happy sigh* Here’s a close up…

20130403-232524.jpg

It’s a little cool in the house tonight (I’m too tired to start a fire and it’s hard to get the temperature just right in the kitchen anyway), so the soap started to create a skin a bit sooner than hoped, and a bit of the skin slipped into the really wide trim piece, which is why it’s a little wonky. I really like the cute trim, to the left of the wide piece. Everyone knows I’m not usually into “cute”, but that trim is adorable.

20130403-232808.jpg

I’ll experiment with the decorations on the pink glittery guest rectangles underneath the wax paper. It may be an extra day before I post any examples if they’re too embarrassing. Lol. Just a fair warning.

Last, I decided to pour a quick small loaf using a blend of my coffee FOs (Hazelnut Cappuccino and Coffee Beans). Once it sets I plan to smooth some bath frosting over it and see how little slices look. I may even drizzle a little dark soap, in Hazelnut, over the frosting too.

20130403-233314.jpg I almost added some ground coffee to the soap, for mild exfoliation and because it’s a natural deodorizer, but decided I wanted to try a pretty version first. *grin*

I’m pretty happy with today’s pours. I had an epiphany earlier that if I was still painting instead of making my products, I wouldn’t be so worried about losses and taxes. That realization helped take the pressure off and I’m just going to have fun this year. That made today’s pours really enjoyable and I’m even more excited to try using these decorations. *big smile* I’m crossing my fingers that I have something fun to post tomorrow.

What do you think of the following picture to use for marketing instead of the picture of my bottle just standing on the shelf? I’m trying to revamp all of my pics and really liked this one. I think I like showing how it’s reduced to just a drop at a time and how glossy the oil is. Any thoughts?

The Incredible, Non-edible Reducers

I am so excited that I couldn’t wait for Larry to come home and help me take a better picture, so I apologize now for the one-handed camera skills. *grin* Tonight was the perfect time to test out the 1 oz orifice reducers in a bottle of massage oil since I want super smooth skin for my doctor’s appointment tomorrow (hey, I am a girl, so I want to be my very best when in a gown and not worried about my legs looking dry lol). Anyway, it took a bit of work to add it to a full bottle of oil without one of my notoriously messy mishaps, but holy smokes was it worth it!! I’m not making it an option for customers – it will go in every oil I sell now! It is incredible! I was literally holding it almost upside down in one hand when I took the picture and one drop had trickled onto my hand. *happy dance* I can’t believe how amazing a tiny piece of plastic can be. Lol. I use the oils a whole lot and it never really bothered me that I had to be careful to not have too much come out at once, but now that I’ve rolled around in those grassy fields on the other side, I know that the grass truly is greener on the other side. *grin* Success!!

Photo Op Idea

In one of my happy dazes I suddenly had the mental image of a girl with an overly dramatic “scared face” spritzing Monsters Away Spray on some odd looking made up monster. I don’t usually go for shtick, but I can’t get that picture out of my head and I think that would be a lot more interesting than a picture of the bottle. I mean, a plain Jane bottle doesn’t really make you wonder what is being sold or really draw you in. Maybe I need to make the pics promoting my products more interesting and creative, instead of just giving the goods. What do you think? I’m not sure on the age for the child in the pic, plus it depends on if any moms are cool with their child being a model (unnamed for privacy of course). I think younger might be better, since they’re the ones the spray is for, plus most of the younger ones are more willing to ham it up and overact the expressions. *grin* If I do the pic should it be some weird, oddly constructed, monster or should it be them spraying under the bed, into the closet, or something else that represents the scary stuff lurking in the dark? Even if I never use the pic(s) for the business, the idea sure makes me grin, so it’s staying in my idea brainstorming app as a happy thought. As always, any input is greatly appreciated!! Well, even more than usual, since really I’m asking for opinions in case I’m still a little too off kilter for normal thinking. *grin* Hmmm, first time I ever tried implying that I’m normal. Maybe I should check with the voices to get their thoughts too. I’m not so sure they’ll be happy with my fibbing about being normal at some point. 😉

Like a Duck to Water

I’m so excited over a soap that I can’t wait until later in the day (it’s almost 2:30 AM here lol). I had a short boost of energy resulting from getting out today and took advantage of it to experiment (again) on a duck soap.

Larry liked the wet look to the 4th ducky in the batch I experimented on a few days ago. We both agreed that the shredded soap just doesn’t fit my mad scientist personality. He asked me why couldn’t I do the extra pour around the soap and then turn it upside down, using that as the duck cupping side. I took that idea a bit further and used wax paper in shapes to let me control the soap a little better. I was able to get the “water” soap to look like it was really splashing and I did a second pour with different crinkles in the paper, so there are some almost lacy-like edges to some of the “water”. *smile so wide I may crack my lips* A little shred made it into my opal-like soap round, so there’s a tiny pink spot on the inside, but that’s covered by the ducky. The first pic is the first water splash (and you can see that annoying little accident), the second is at half of the second stage, and the third is the cutie patootie result, sitting on my hand. The skin tone helped the ice blue water really pop in the pic, so I am even happier. If people like these I think I can do a few “At the Fair” variations of duck soaps to go in the Easter and summer kid combos.
