Breast Cancer Awareness

I’ve had some health issues that kept me away from my delightful experiments for over a month now, but I’m tickled to talk a bit about an upcoming event. This year I will again donate 150 or so small pink ribbon soaps for the Overbrook Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in late September. Last year I did a variety of scents and had a heck of a time making enough soaps in a two week period to put in all of the goodie bags. Despite my best attempts I was unable to make enough to get one in each bag and broke several molds from so much use in just a few days. The Walk gives out swag bags of items supporting the cause for registered walkers and the turn out last year was incredible enough to bring a tear to nearly every eye. This year is expected to have an even better turn out, and this time I have a lot more notice, so I’m starting to make the donation soaps and shouldn’t have a problem making enough this time.

I love being able to do something for a cause that is so close to my heart – my grandmother died from it and an aunt is a survivor twice over. The billing clerk gave me awhile to glow over being able to have a good impact again and then reminded me that I needed to come up with some ways to improve sales when I have a booth at the event (for shopping before the walk). Last year saw pretty meager sales at it and some awkward moments. It was the first real event and I lost control over how I wanted the table set up. Thankfully this year I am way more organized and have had some incredible sales to give me some confidence. I am brutally honest about my shortcomings and talking about myself or my creations is one of the hardest things for me to do in person. I’m better at waxing poetic in writing or an energetic email about the benefits of certain ingredients. This time I’ll focus on why certain items are best sellers and see if I can translate that to this event too, and why my unique items are worth their attention instead of buying something from Bath & Body the next time they’re at the mall. It’s a tough goal for me, but if I’m healthy enough to be at the event, then I am definitely up to the challenge.

I realized that if I combined a best seller with honoring the cause, then it’d be a lot easier to bring people in for a sale, too. I’m going to make a goat’s milk lotion with the traditional emulsifying wax in the customary breast cancer ribbon pink and name it along the lines of “I’m a survivor” or “We will find a cure”. I haven’t decided if I’ll make a new scent blend or if I’ll use an established top seller and use it with the alternate name, much like I do with a few items that I keep year round but have holiday names also (like Snowman Kisses). I know that lotion sells better than soaps there, so I’ll have a few of the large ribbon soaps on hand, but will try to have a healthy amount of the pink lotions front and center. Last year I tended to use a bubblegum scent the most for the event’s items, intending to be uplifting and happy. I’m thinking that I might do two main scents this time – a yummy dessert or fruit scent and then a floral, that way the main preferences are covered. I have a lot of time to decide and am enjoying my favorite part (yep, making lists of tons of ideas pinging around like pinballs *grin*).

This time I’m also going to do my own marketing as well. I appreciate all that the event coordinators do, but people generally weren’t aware that I would be there selling my products. My mom had mentioned it to some people, but I’m going to make some fliers to hang in their stores a week before and see if I can even get a little note in their paper. This time I’ll have fliers to hand to prospective customers too, I think, instead of just my business card. Maybe people still aren’t aware that there will be vendors selling and won’t have cash with them, and a business card is easy to forget in your pocket when you toss your jeans in the wash. A piece of paper with a short blurb about pampering with natural benefits and my top sellers, with contact info, will be a lot harder to overlook, especially on top of the business card stapled to the donation soap. *grin* I’m crossing my fingers that some of this works.

I’m sure I’ll have plenty of other thoughts that I’ll throw at you, my note apps, and my lists, along with plenty of requests for feedback, but for now I’m going to let my mind rest for awhile. Happy Friday!! 🙂

Cute idea!

I love when customers have cute ideas for using my products. I was happy enough to get an order for the whole loaf of watermelon soaps that I just finished yesterday. Today I learned that the soaps will be goodies for bunco. What a creative idea! (Only $1.25 per pack of two slices, by the way.)

Part of what I love about making products is the creativity behinds them. I love blending scents, exploring coloring options, and challenging myself with new additives. I am usually pretty clueless when it comes to cute displays or uses, though, I admit. *grin* I can organize a basket pretty decently, I think, and love to give products as gifts. I would never think of using them for party favors and goody bags. That is just too cute!

What a great boost to the day to have someone say that I should leave my soap as is, that they’re perfect and awesome as they are. *happy sigh* I’m not used to compliments, honestly, and I really value the ones that I get. To top it off I got a second compliment today too. Sometimes I need that reminder to quit worrying about being perfect. What an uplifting reminder! May any lessons you have today be just as wonderful as mine! *smile*

Arabian Nights and website changes

I’ve finally gotten over a wicked bug that hit me enough to finally work on the most recent order. I got an order for Sands of Morocco Goat’s Milk, version 3, lotion, among others, and boy did I enjoy working with it! It smells better in the lotion than when I was smelling it straight from the bottle. *happy sigh*

I decided to rename it Arabian Nights. When I was smelling the finished lotion it was so exotic and spicy that it made me think of Aladdin. I imagine that Jasmine would have soaked in such a scented bath or been pampered in a similar scented oil. I’m getting better at picking FOs apparently and love each new scent more than the last.

While thinking over needing to change the name of the FO on my website I also puzzled over how to make my site less overwhelming/intimidating. It dawned on me that since I have unlimited pages due to upgrading my site I could make different pages for the FOs. I decided to make a page (hmm, will it end up being close to two pages from enjoying dessert scents so much? *laugh*) named “Food Scents”, another as Men’s/Unisex Scents”, and I haven’t decided what to name the third page of FOs. I will put the florals, spa, and other non-food scents together. All suggestions are appreciated, as always. *grin*

While I’m changing my website I’m debating adding a super straightforward page. Some customers have had trouble with finding prices for things, so I’m thinking of make a page that simply lists the item, size, and price. No descriptions, no tie-ins, or anything. I figure it might help customers who know what they’re wanting, but don’t want to search (or get overwhelming looking) for the prices. I usually try to keep things compact, with as few pages as I can, but now I’m wondering if I’ve approached my website from the wrong point of view. Maybe if each variations had their own page, with a just pricing page too, then it’ll be easier for people to get to the specific section that they’re interested in. The Administrative side of me is delighted to have an excuse to retool the website, too. *grin*

I’m hoping to experiment with the ice cream soaps soon, and look forward to sharing that experience. In the meantime I’ll next share a picture of the sliced watermelon loaf soap experiment. I hope you have a great evening!

Today’s new scents

As the posted picture shows I got my new FOs today. *mini dance* I’m going to rename them, but in the meantime I’ll use the official names for this post.

The Sands of Morocco FO is spicy and sensual. Somehow it comes across as warm, which truly does fit in with the desert thing. The sandalwood and musk are the sensual notes. Although it’s not listed in the scent profile or crafter notes, I think that there’s a strong note of clove that lends itself to that spicy characteristic. I think that women will like for men to smell this way. *wink*

Cool Water for Men (cologne clone) should be a best seller, I swear! It is absolutely amazing. Fresh, clean, and sexy, with notes of marine and woods. I didn’t think that it was possible, but I think it’s even more refreshing (and sexy) than South Pacific Waters. *dramatic sigh* Heellloooo

Lastly, Hazelnut Cappuccino is phenomenal. As you know I wasn’t too fond of the Coffee FO that I previously bought. That was a misfortunate experience. However, I had the chance to get this FO as a free gift from the wholesaler and I went for it. I’m so glad too! The hazelnut is light in it and the cream is absolutely luscious. It smells just like brewed coffee with sweet creamer. It doesn’t have the sharp and bitter notes of the Coffee FO. Now I can go back to planning the coffee shop line. *grin* I want to try this in my gentle lotion, so when I do my morning facial moisturizing I get the comforting “good morning” kick in this part of my routine. I’m so glad that I got this FO!

In addition to the FOs I got two soap molds. I got an extra mold of guest rounds since I make so many of those and I can use it for fizzies too. The most exciting item of the order is my guest loaf mold. I can pour a load of soap and then cut it into slices, allowing me to make neat shapes inside without the issues I’ve had with embeds. I can make what looks like slices of watermelon or even geometric shapes. I think the slices will look much better than the rounds or domed bars for soaps with additives, like ground coffee or ground apricot seeds. I can’t wait to make some different soaps and post them!

All in all it was definitely a worthwhile round of shopping. *grin*

Honeymoon Basket

I have an order for a fun basket to be given as a wedding/honeymoon gift. It’s basically a retooling of my seduction basket and a bit more expensive. I’ve been thinking of redoing that basket for some time, as I’ve developed more recipes and expanded the options, so I’m pretty excited. Plus, it’s hard to get restless when it’s one of everything! Lol. I’m going to include the usual erotic dice, votive candles, feather, and erotic coupons, but I think it’s up to them to do a blindfold if they want one. *cheeky grin* There will be quite a variety of oils including peppermint EO, sensuality EO, Lovin’ with Licorice, Cotton Candy, South Pacific Waters (need a dash of sexy and refreshing in there), and then I think I’ll add in some bath salts. If I were close friends with the couple I’d consider a little tongue in cheek amusement by adding my muscle rub. Rofl. I’m staying professional though and debating what else to make for it. I’ve been doing research on aphrodisiac EOs, so I’ll add in some ylang ylang and look what blend has myrrh (can’t afford the regular, so it’s in one of the blends). I read that women are more turned on by a musky masculine scent than the “gentler” scents, so I’m debating which of my male line to go with. Sand Dune seems to be going over well with men, so I think I’ll probably end up with that, which I’ve never done in oils before.

If I’m being honest I must admit to being a little nervous. I think it’s a really fun and unique wedding gift, and I’m always amused by risqué gifts, but I wonder how other wedding guests will take such an item? Truthfully it’s not really my concern, but it has my business name all over everything, so I want to walk that line on the right side. Lol.

Anyway, I think I might add a few soap cordials and mini bottles of products that can be used on their honeymoon for the everyday instead of just bedroom, too, like some lotion. It’s fun to have free rein, but it’s hard to decide what everyone will like when you don’t really know them. Lol.

I should probably go get started. I have a delivery of FOs and a couple of new molds that will arrive any day, and we know how distracted I get by my deliveries. *grin* I ordered the cutest soap mold that I can’t wait to blog about…

Computer Guru

Okay, I’m not really a computer guru, but I really felt like one today. I updated my website and then did some awesome stuff on my gaming community (I know, not business, but it supports how awesome I feel about my new mad skills lol). I am still a bit giddy and a little loopy on medicine, so I’m hitting the blog to share the happy spirit.

Anyway, I added a few pages to my website. I got the gift certificate information entered, then decided it’d probably be more cohesive if payments had their own page, so a new page was built and data moved/redone. I bet you guessed – the nerd in me was in 7th heaven playing in picky details land. *cheeky grin* I am debating removing the collection agency and bounced check info from my home page and sticking to just the payments page.

I finally checked off a multi-step item from my website to-do list too!! I made an ingredients page and entered all of the ingredient information for my product ingredients. I’m sure I missed a few items and put a caveat that it’s not all inclusive, but I’m pretty proud of tackling so much data. According to a document I got I don’t have to label ingredients on the products themselves because this is a hobby instead of a true business. I’ve always intended to have this page for reference for customers though, just because it’s the right thing. I’m so proud that I got so much done today!

I also had a lightbulb moment and created/printed little slips for addresses and names for credit card customers that don’t want their receipt emailed or texted when purchasing in person. I was thinking about the citywide and had the image of an elderly person being a little unhappy with my app because they don’t do techie stuff. I even found my old Avon briefcase bag and put all of the papers for the citywide, including the new wonderful gift certificates and above mentioned slips. I was pretty stoked that I had the stroke of genius and used the expensive Avon rep bag. Lol.

To top it all off I started experimenting with some tools I haven’t messed with before and created a guest book for the site. I called the page “Customer Feedback” and hope that customers feel comfortable posting some testimonials and site feedback on it. If there are complaints or questions I will reply directly on there and try not to shrink away from things. Thankfully I’ve never had much of a problem with that, but I’m preparing myself in case it happens. I know that I utilize the customer reviews on my wholesaler’s site constantly and want to provide that ability for my own customers. Maybe some comments over which version of lotion people like, their experience with scents, etc., will make it a little easier for others to decide. There are so many options that it’s hard to know what to try and I want to provide a little help for those that are interested, but don’t really want to contact me about it. (I don’t care for sales routines either, and although I try to be as helpful as possible, and not pushy, I know that people aren’t always in the mood for one-on-one service.)

Anyway, I’m seriously happy that I got so much done and only made a small mistake. I forgot to look at the site on my nook or iPhone to check that text boxes weren’t overlapping. I need to adjust a couple of boxes on two pages that I updated, but otherwise I’m one satisfied nerd. *cheesy grin* I hope you have a great week and that I have some additional “booyah” posts this week to share!

Mechanic Soap V2 follow up

Larry tested the new version of mechanic soap and it works wonderfully! *happy dance* It removed the Goodyear plant muck, which is so hard to do, and works a little better than my sugar scrub. The exfoliants worked well without being too harsh, he said his skin was still moist, and he liked the texture. Awesome! I’m so happy about it. For once he liked the scent and said it should definitely be one of my items. He didn’t notice a mess in the bottom of the tub, either, which was one of my biggest concerns. My second helper had some issues pouring the soaps, but I have a new recipe completed and will make a nice round of soaps soon to replace the experimental batch. Oh yeah ^5

Mmmm Andes

Hi, my name is Georgia, and I am addicted to lists and planning. Lol. I just can’t help myself. Somehow creating a list soothes me. I will be honest and admit that sometimes I delete lists just so that I can remake them.

In light of this addiction I have tons of physical and virtual lists of things I want to do and make in my “lab” as my own version of a mad scientist. I added a new inspiration to my list that I’m so excited about that I just have to share.

I can’t wait to get some umph and create some mint chocolate bars of soap. I want to make some green and brown layered soaps to mimic an Andes mint. I make mint cocoa massage and body oils, so I have a great equation for the FOs all ready. I like mixing the visual and scent aspects of soap, as you can tell from my surprise soaps and what not, and I’m hoping that I can pull these off. I’ve been thinking over how to redo my dessert cake soaps for having on hand, since they don’t store well, so I’ll make them when I get orders, and have a different variation on hand. Well, thinking of making chocolate and strawberry layered soap, to follow the scent profile of the dessert cake soaps, I quickly went to some of my favorite desserts and got so excited when I could just see in my mind these gorgeous soaps. A luscious dark brown and a brilliant green layer. Instead of a sandwich I may leave it at two layers if I totally suck, but I’ve done other layered soaps that turned out wonderfully, so I think I just need to decide what is more visually striking to me.

I admit that I haven’t made the bath cookies yet. *sigh* I’m still so excited about them and have been listing options (see, even lists for each idea lol) for what to sprinkle on them to help them look neat. I’m afraid that if I don’t add some herbal topping that they’ll look like over baked sugar cookies or dried play doh. Lol. I’ve been debating what will be nice in bath water, instead of just making it pretty. I sketched a cookie with anise on it, but thought that it would seriously suck to have to clean that out of the tub. I’ve always been so careful to think about my exciting ideas from a user point of view, hence finding my bath tea bags and things like that. So, I’m thinking about experimenting with the new fine iridescent white sparkles to act like sugar. I’m going to roll them in the glitter, like a peanut butter cookie, and bake, and hopefully they’ll resemble a pretty version of sugar. I want something a little more eye catching than just using sugar. If a customer doesn’t rinse the tub could they get ants after using, because of the sugary water residue? *grin* See why I also have a list of devil’s advocate arguments. Lol. I could always use bath salts, but the girly part of me really wants to try out the glitter. *shaking head at self with a laugh* I think sparkly bath cookies would be an adorable addition to the girl combos and would be so adorable to little girly girls. *smile* If the slightly goth and morbid me thinks this glitter is adorable and gets all dorky about it, I figure I have a good chance that little girls will like it too. Lol.

Anyway, that’s a bit of my musings and a small confession that isn’t really a secret to anyone that knows me. *grin* (Btw, don’t you dare tease me about this Dude – you know who you are. *grin*) I have a list of ideas, a few of what to take for events, a ton of to-dos (bless the iPhone 4 reminders app), my previously admitted ones, scent names, and what spreadsheets I want to make. (Yeah, yeah. I all ready admitted that I’m a nerd that loves a spreadsheet, so shush.) In the meantime I’m writing ideas of what to post on Pinterest now that I’ve been invited. I seriously need to quit trolling and replying to questions on other people’s pins regarding EOs and what not. *grin* Have a great day. If you’re on Pinterest today, don’t be surprised to run across georgiasbath trolling. It’s another confessed behavioral quirk 😉

Baby wipes

Yesterday my helpers (two helpers now!) were in the mood to work and learn, so I was able to get several things done with their help.

I utilized the tween energy to make some goat’s milk lotion, since she could stir almost nonstop without it bothering her. I experimented with my new Coffee Bean FO, which definitely needs a lot of experimentation to find the right ratio! Anyway, a ml was so eye-watering that I added three versions of vanilla to mellow it out a bit. It still needs a lot of help, but anyway…My new helper enthusiastically loved it, while my nose was wrinkled and I turned the fan on to get the stink out of the room, so that experiment became her gift for helping, and she will be the tester for the Coffee Bean. (Did you know that some Tweens drink coffee before school?! I couldn’t believe how young the coffee drinkers are getting. Whoa, I’m out of touch.)

Anyway, I needed to make a batch of lavender GM samples and had her follow my recipe (a great chance to teach about measuring liquids, reading mililiters, reading recipes, and observing thorough cleanliness), and I commented about being glad to be done with the lavender items, since I can’t stand lavender. My helper took a sniff and suddenly I almost saw a light bulb come on over her head. “It smells like baby wipes!” Hm, that’s not really what I aim for when making products. Lol. She made a few comments about how neat it was to be able to make stuff smell like things from the store (which, admittedly, it is, but please not something associated with butts *sassy wink*) and we did a little lesson about the importance of chemistry, the difference of FOs and EOs, and how to read/apply ratios. I was still mulling over baby wipes when I noticed her over by the mechanic soaps.

Apparently Tweens still retain the childhood curiosity that makes them want to poke stuff. Lol. Thankfully she understood the importance of not touching or disturbing the sellable items, but that tester bar would have been crying from being poked and prodded so much if it was alive. *grin* The poor bar has wrinkles, fingerprints, and bits of soap dripping UP the mold. I had to keep reminding her to wash, because she was over there playing in it as it set anytime I turned, and rubbed it in like lotion. It was rather funny and I think it was intriguing to watch a liquid solidify in person. Actually seeing the process, “like making an ice cube”, seemed to make her day. I do think that I’ll avoid soap making with the girls over though, since I haven’t developed the eyes-in-the-back-of-my-head thing yet. *grin*

By the way, a great way to get a tween to handle processes carefully is to say that you could go to jail for not following the instructions. I doubt that it was so much about me going to jail, but more of not being able to be around the product making anymore, but I’ll take what works. Lol. It really worked for stressing the importance of every quarter mililiter being exact and I don’t feel guilty at all. It gave me a smile to hear “we can’t have you going to jail” after the baby wipes kick to the ego. *grin* I’ll take what I can get 😉

A little funk

I managed to get myself up and made a batch each of goat’s milk V2 and V3. Interestingly enough the silky emulsifying wax (V3) melted and incorporated much better and quicker than the pot of V2. That was admittedly a little surprising, since the first batch of V3 I ever made had odd little bulbs of wax that didn’t fully melt and incorporate. Granted that it looked really freaking cool in a colored bottle of lotion (think small tapioca pearls kind of look in a gorgeous lavender lotion).

Anyway, I made two batches of samples and then some 4 oz bottles to have on hand for the citywide garage sale next week (or the one after). I decided that I should make Soda Shoppe in V3 for those that love the scent, but don’t want the thick feeling of the V2 that I have on hand. Of course I was tickled making that and having a little to “test”. *wink*

I decided to do some unscented, dreamsicle, and spa; all best sellers except unscented. They smelled so good and made a tremendous mess. Lol. When I started cleaning up I had little blobs of lotion left behind and I hated to wash it out, so I figured I’d utilize the extras as I was washing the equipment up.

I really didn’t think about the funk from rubbing in dabs of these scents all over. Add some lavender, which I can’t stand the smell of anyway, and I’m a walking sensory what-not-to-wear example. *cracking up* I still like the spa on my elbow and it works well with most of the scents. The dreamsicle and root beer float make a horrible scent when mixed, I must admit.

I really need to think through these things. Lol. I need to make another batch of sample lotions and maybe some bubble wash. I’m not sure what I’ll have my helpers do other than attach lotion labels tomorrow. I planned on making bath cookies with them, which I think will be a super fun new product, but discovered that I’m out of cornstarch, so I’m back to the drawing board. I might let them help me pour Acne Bee Gone Soaps or Mechanic soaps, since they enjoyed the fact that they really had a hand in making the last batch of soaps. Whatever we do, I’m not wearing more than one scent, that’s for sure!!
