SDC

I’m not going to bog your browser down with a ton of pictures of the Christmas lights on the buildings, but for my final vacation post I wanted to share some of the magical moments with you. *smile*

I’m only sharing one picture of buildings, so you can get an idea of the amazing amount of lights throughout the park without overwhelming you or your browser. This is just two little buildings in the huge park.

IMG_1704.JPG

In the picture below I wanted to show one of the trees. They had these cool lights that Larry and I watched for what was probably a freakishly long time. The lights had a pattern, so it looked like they were dripping. During the day it was like dripping icicles, but at night the trees were lit with some incredibly vivid colors, so the effect was so neat. The second picture is of that incredibly huge Christmas tree that has a full light show set to music. It had probably fifty light patterns, but this picture turned out the best. Look how small the people are compared (btw, there’s no way to take a picture of that tree without catching a bunch of other visitors in the shot. It was just that crowded and we went before the busy part of the season!).

IMG_1702.JPG

They also had a parade twice with some lit floats, various lit characters, and whatnot. I’m sharing my two favorites from the parade below. I have loved The Nutcracker and Babes in Toyland ever since I was little, so I’m always drawn to the toy soldiers and Nutcrackers anywhere I go. This guy was SO tall and fantastical that I had to take a picture. It was like seeing one of my favorite characters in real life. *grin* I totally went fangirl when he knelt down and shook hands with a toddler that just stared with eyes like saucers. The second is of one of two adorable little guys that interacted amazingly with the crowd. The colors were so bright and uplifting that I’m hoping to try to match them in some soaps (I really want to make some product once I’m fully over this yuck I developed from vacation).

IMG_1701.JPG

Last I just had to share about the blacksmith. While he waited for his next bit of metal to heat up he chatted with us. It turns out that he was making over fifty old fashioned nails for the church. They were going to give them during services as a reminder of the reason for the season. It was absolutely fascinating to watch him take a hunk of metal and manipulate it into a functional work of art. Seeing them get made gave me such an appreciation for the work that went into little things we take for granted in our daily lives that were a lot harder to come by in olden times. Combine that mental slap of appreciation with seeing this close representation of what would have been used in biblical times and I got overwhelmed with emotions to the point that I had to step into the shop to distract myself. It’s ironic that I have been into writing since I started learning to read, yet I can’t find adequate words to convey that experience. It feels like I described a splinter when it’s really a massive cut down to the bone. What a gift this craftsman has to be able to create/recreate items as it was done in history and to touch hearts with something so simple.

IMG_1703.JPG

If you ever find yourself trying to decide on a vacation spot I totally recommend Branson, MO. I think it can appeal to most people. There are craftsman, a Titanic exhibit (we hope to hit that one next time), summer activities like go carts and mini golf, a wide variety of musicals and comedy shows, tons of recreated history (Shepherd of the Hills is just outside of the city!), and tons of comfort foods. We have gone seven times now, at two different times of year, and it’s always an incredible experience.

Thank you for sharing in this with me. It was a little break from the monotony of being chronically ill and being at home almost all of the time, and it really cheered me up. I hope I captured a little of that magic and brought some happiness to your life, too. Until tomorrow, happy pampering. 🙂

Cold and Cranky

I had planned to finish sharing about Branson tonight, but I’ve spent hours dealing with Apple to get my defective phone taken care of and am still a bit cranky, and honestly right now the last thing I want to do is see cheery stuff. Lol. Top it off it’s either sleeting or snowing (can’t really tell which since the wind is blowing so hard that snow can become a pelted weapon at this speed, making it a toss up as to which it really is *laugh*), which caused a pain flare up. Instead, I’m going to share a pin my friend sent me on Pinterest recently. It SO fits my sense of humor. It’s always the small quiet ones that you should worry about, right?

IMG_9471.JPG

Mawahaha…*grin* By the way, if you have a bent sense of humor like mine, then you totally have to check out the “Build a Snowman” parody on YouTube called “Will You Help Me Hide a Body”. It’s so twisted and awesome. So much so that Larry actually made that my ringtone. Now that’s romance there. I’m not totally sure which of us is the prospective sociopath, but we’ll help one another no matter how morbid it gets apparently. *cracking up*

Anyway, nothing like a little twisted humor to lighten the mood. *grin* I hope you have a wonderful Tuesday and stay warm. 🙂

Oops

I’ve all ready missed a day in the NaBloPoMo. *sigh* I’m rather disappointed that I messed up, because I’ve been trying really hard. I have a decent excuse though. I slept almost completely around the clock yesterday. I think the lack of sleep from an uncomfortable bed, the massively increased activity during vacation, and then the cold triggering my sinus infection to really kick into gear all came together and my body just gave up the fight. Lol

I thought I might make it up to you with some total awesomeness. Warning, it’ll take a few minutes for this post to load because it’s more picture heavy than my usual posts. Anyway, we brought home some souvenirs and one from Silver Dollar City (SDC) is so adorable. While we were there we watched the glass blowers make four pieces. The first full demonstration that we caught was for a blown glass snowman. I have found glass blowing fascinating ever since I read about it probably fifteen years ago and the artistic side of me loves the creative process of it. They asked for color suggestions from the audience (red and white) to go with the otherwise clear glass, and slowly began to construct it, piece by piece.

IMG_1500.JPG
First he takes a dollop of glass and begins to cool, shape, and blow it into the proportion that he wanted.

IMG_1504.JPG
At this step he dipped the glass into shards of what actually dyes the glass. How cool is that?!

IMG_1509.JPG
The other craftsman added a dollop of glass to make the next portion of the snowman, which the glass blower then manipulated and shaped.

IMG_1512.JPG
At this point he had finished shaping the new part and was smoothing it.

IMG_1515.JPG
They broke the connection to the blow pipe and set the partial snowman on the work table while preparing another stick to create a new attachment point, so that more sections could be added and worked on.

IMG_1518.JPG
I couldn’t get shots of some of the work due to their positions, but they quickly got the piece attached onto the new stick.

IMG_1519.JPG
The next step was to add some glass to be shaped into a scarf. He did some shaping and working of the piece, which I didn’t get pictures of, and then they added a top hat.

IMG_1523.JPG

IMG_1524.JPG
As the glass cooled from the manipulation the beautiful color of the top hat began to show, and he then moved on to an adorable little glass carrot nose.

Sadly the piece had to go into the annealing oven for 24 hours to cool at a slow rate, so I don’t have a finished picture for that piece. However, they had a few for sale in the shop in a variety of colors and styles, all handmade on the premises.

IMG_1531.JPG

IMG_1530.JPG

And we brought home one very unique little guy, too.

IMG_1663.JPG

He has the cutest little crooked nose that really shows that it’s a handmade work of art. *grin* I’m really glad that we were able to swing another piece from SDC and our not-so-little snowman makes me smile every time I catch a glimpse of it. I hope our Frosty and the process behind his creation fascinated and cheered you up as much as it did me. I wish you a very happy and healthy week. Tomorrow I’ll share a little bit more about SDC and then I’ll let the subject go. 🙂

Peculiar Becomes Her

I got back home tonight and have three fur babies wanting, and deserving, lots of attention, so tonight is mostly just another picture. There’s a town that we drive past on the way to Branson that I think would be a perfect place for me to live. Although it seems like a nice community too, mostly I just really think the name would so work with my personality. *grin* Whatcha think? Lol

At Peace

Tonight I thought I’d share my favorite picture from today’s adventures at Silver Dollar City in Branson, MO. I’ll post more over the next few days, but my new phone went squirrelly and I’ll have to reprogram it, so I’m working off of my old limited access phone and can’t do much. It works out well though because one picture came out well from one of the most peaceful moments I experienced today. We went into The Wilderness Church and while I was standing at the front, looking out the huge window that overlooks some of the park, I turned and saw this amazing altar made out of a big log. The lantern light was casting a beautiful glow over it, with the gentle glow of the Christmas tree. It was so incredibly peaceful. We’ve enjoyed the beautiful twinkling lights, yummy foods, and handcrafted items, while this was a great reminder of the reason for the season. I wish you the same peace tonight.

Now That’s a Dessert

Hi there! It’s been quite a busy day, but so much fun. I’m exhausted, so I’m going to share a few pics and then hopefully fall asleep many hours before my usual bedtime. Lol

Today we went to some outlet malls (a good chunk of my Christmas shopping is done now!), saw the Dixie Stampede dinner show (which sadly didn’t allow photography, so I can’t share that incredible experience), and then we finished the day with our first trip to Cakes-n-Creams for our favorite treat of a funnel cake supreme sundae.

My internet connection is spotty at the resort, so I’ll have to share most of the pics later. I’ll leave you with a picture of what a real dessert looks like. *big grin* In a 50s style diner, too!

Branson Here We Come

For the first time since we adopted Bo Larry and I are getting away for a few days. We have an awesome house sitter (thank you again!!) that’s going to be at home with the fur babies, most especially Bo. Larry has taken a lot of camping trips and even a small vacation away, but I’ve never spent more than 8 hours away from Bo. Things worked out perfectly and we are headed to Branson, MO for a few days in just a few hours.

If you aren’t familiar with Branson it’s kind of like Vegas for Country Folks. *grin* Lots of music venues, incredible scenery around a gorgeous lake, and tons of bright lights. We get to see even more bright lights since Branson went Christmas as of November 1st.

We’re going to Silver Dollar City Theme Park where they’re celebrating an Old Time Christmas with bluegrass, country, and gospel singers, 5 million Christmas lights, and incredible items for sale. They have a fun holiday parade each night, and even a 5 story Christmas tree with special effects and a light show. The park is full of craftsmen demonstrating the techniques and skills that were used before technology became mainstream. Our favorite artisans are the glassblowers and the blacksmith. They are absolutely fascinating. Their hand-crafted items are available for sale, too! Handmade candles, freshly made candies, and hand carved wood. *happy sigh* I’ll share pictures over the next few days.

We are also going to dinner at The Dixie Stampede dinner show. This will be Dolly Parton’s holiday show with the North Pole versus the South Pole instead of the traditional (although light hearted) Dixie divide. It’s our version of the Knights dinner theater. *grin* No silverware while watching amazing horse riding stunts, a living nativity, ostrich races, and listening to some beautiful music. The vegetable cream soup is my favorite part of the meal. I’ll definitely be showing the recipe and soup on here as it keeps getting colder.

We’ll also hit some outlet malls and our favorite little diner, Cakes-n-Creams, where we get a funnel cake topped with an ice cream sundae. So decadent and delicious.

Branson is where we had our honeymoon and for the first seven years we went back each November for the holiday festival. I know that some people hate how early Christmas hits the stores and stuff, but the beginning of November isn’t excessively cold yet, it’s easy to get time off of work, and it’s not nearly as crowded, so it’s the perfect time for us. It works great for getting a start on Christmas shopping, too. We almost always stay at the same resort and we have an ornament from the resort for each year. It’s so easy to lose track of what Christmas is all about, so seeing those ornaments each year reminds us that it’s about the love and family, and not how many boxes are under the tree.

I’ll try to spread the pics over several days, so it doesn’t get overwhelming and doesn’t bog down the loading of my page for you. This is the first time we’ve gone since I had to start using a cane and walker, and since I had the leg injuries, so I figure I’m in for some new life lessons in coping with my illness and adapting. It took me a week to finally agree that it’s a smart idea to take the walker. lol I’m a bit nervous over the physical toll the trip may take and of getting injured in public, and being away from Bo for the first time (hey, it’s basically like a mom leaving her toddler for the first time, mine is just hairier and protective. *laugh*). This trip is like a shining star after three years of darkness. I can just let go for a few days and have a better frame of mind to get me through the rough times ahead. 🙂

A Little Bit About My Fur Babies

I thought I’d take a little detour and give a little glimpse into my personal life. It always slips in anyway, and I’ve mentioned my fur babies, but never given any details, so tonight I’m sharing a little about them. We have a healthy sized Dane/Lab mix (thankfully he was a runt), a male Maine Coon cat, and a female tortoiseshell cat.

Teddy, or Theodore when he’s smacking his sister upside the head, is the Maine Coon and he is the oldest. He’s pretty independent and mostly spends his days in his hiding spots, but is a little love bug for about ten minutes per night, when he gets in bed with me. I have a ton of pictures from when he was younger (10 years old now! Wow!), but I couldn’t find my back up disc that I saved the pics to so I could free up space on my phone for an update.

IMG_0049.JPG
On rare occasions I can take him out to enjoy the fresh air and eat some grass, too. He yowls like I’m abusing him horribly as I take him back in, even if he’s on his leash, so the outings are less frequent, but he sure enjoys his tunnel when he goes out.

IMG_1587.JPG

The next oldest is Bo, who will always be “the puppy”. He’s a rescue dog and was found in some timber in a culvert out in the country. He was so tiny when we got him that he could curl right up on the floorboard of my Saturn. It was such a tiring day for the poor baby.

IMG_0045.JPG
We wanted to try and get him used to water while young. He was truly asleep in the next picture and it’s one of my favorite shots of him. *grin*

IMG_0046.JPG
He’s been with us since my relapse originally began, so he’s used to my slow pace, and prefers to snuggle and sleep a lot. I figure he has to rebuild his energy because when he plays he’s like a small horse galloping and racing all around, then shaking the stuffing out of his toys, and usually knocking things over with that whip of a tail. *grin*

Bo seriously loves car rides, although he’s supposed to stick to the back seat. We took him with us when we had to drive into the city recently for some home repair items and Bo became protective enough of me that he climbed right up front. I couldn’t resist taking some pictures and then caught him at a really amusing moment.

IMG_1635.JPG
“Oh no! They found me!”

And I love this pic, too. He’s just so happy to go for a drive.

IMG_0418.JPG

He’s a big baby most of the time, but is incredibly protective of his home, me, and what he has decided is his domain, which includes a block each way around the house. Anything that he can see is his, in his mind. *laugh* Some days his sweet and playful antics are the only things that can get me out of bed, and when I’m really having a bad flare he curls up with me and tries to smother me with loving, which always stops the tears.

The youngest is Abby, short for Abigail. She is a little evil, I must say. We had asked for the calmest cat in the litter and ended up with a wild child that is quite a bully. She went through a phase where she kept stealing Bo’s critter toys. It was the funniest thing to see the tail of a toy suddenly disappear behind some furniture. She would drag her “kills” all over the house and it drove Bo nuts, since he’s not very good about sharing. *laugh* She always looked so proud of herself. This was one of the few times that she brought it out into the open instead of under or behind furniture.

IMG_1560.JPG

Abby is also the happiest cat I have ever had or even seen. She won’t stop purring if she’s getting attention, even at the vet’s. The vet has to turn on water to get her to pause in the purring long enough to listen with his stethoscope. Seriously. It’s wild. Abby is the cutest sleeper too.

IMG_1434.JPG

She loves car rides, too, as long as she’s able to run around. She gets put in the carrier for entering and exiting, but goes bonkers if the vehicle moves and she’s still enclosed. Ever since she was tiny she’s loved the driver’s seat for some reason.

IMG_2354.JPG

Anyway, I hope you don’t mind my taking the train down a scenic route and sharing about the “kids”. They’ve really helped me during the dark times in this relapse. We’re truly blessed to have (and had) such loving animals giving us such happy moments and I hope they brought a few smiles to you, too. 🙂

A Few Ideas

I mentioned last night that I have been percolating a few ideas, so I thought tonight I’d share (warn you). *grin*

First, as I just barely mentioned last night, I’m thinking of doing a “Scent Census”. Catchy, right?! I was watching a cooking show and they had a “soup census”, which got one hamster racing like crazy on its hamster wheel and made me start playing with the name and the idea of doing another poll. I think maybe the fun name will help tempt a few to look and click.

My favorite idea that I’m juggling around is to make a few companion pieces for the Monsters Away Spray. I’ve been thinking it’d be neat to use my herbs (no, no, I don’t live in a friendly state, so mine are literal herbs and not something that could make a person giggly or crave snacks) that are too old to use in actual bath products, but still have some aromatherapy power left. I still have quite a few bath tea bags left and I thought the herbs in a bath tea bag would work rather well as a sachet. I could use chamomile, lavender, and maybe peppermint in there. The Spray is for direct Monster fighting, whereas the sachet would be to help keep those monsters repelled or to help keep them away from the bed when slipped under the pillow. *grin* Maybe even a cute little bag that the two products will fit into for easy gift giving, too. Plus, I have rethought the idea of how to actually promote the spray. Nobody felt their kid would be into a little amateur acting to get a marketing picture taken when I had debated a silly handmade monster head or even a costume mask, but I’ve been thinking maybe a simpler and truly realistic picture would work. The closet door is open in the background, the darkness deep and completing obscuring the items inside the closet. A child is in the forefront pointing at the closet and you see an adult’s hand at the other edge of the picture reaching out and spraying some Monsters Away Spray at the invisible closet monster that their little one is certain is there when the lights are out. Or maybe even under the bed, if it was dark enough to be believable, yet light enough in the room to actually get a good shot. Most likely anything involving a kid is going to be massively more interesting than a picture of the bottle. Lol.

To round off this post I thought I’d also mention that I’m playing with the idea of soap “cake” slices again for Christmas, although probably not for combos this time. I was thinking of using the Lime Margarita FO and making a bright green soap cake and piping white soap frosting onto it. Maybe do a Christmas Cake that looks more like a poke cake or fruit cake, with diced brightly dyed clear pieces embedded within a chocolaty cake, so you see the pretty squares all along the sides and as you wear it down washing. That one may look a lot better in my mind than it could ever be in reality though. *laugh* A red velvet soap cake is another idea. I bought some Americana red soap colorant bars the last time I did a big order and I bet that would give a nice rich dark color when used with a tiny sliver of black colorant too. Pipe on some white or off white soap frosting on it, too, of course, unless I get creative with a middle layer and can’t figure out how to cost effectively package a slice with that frosting on it.

If you think something sounds like a fun idea and maybe the next great seller for this Christmas, please don’t hesitate to comment. In the meantime pamper on, Garth. 🙂

National Blog Posting Month

Hold onto your hats because I’m going to try the NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) challenge. The goal is to try to write a post every single day for the month. There isn’t a theme and it can be totally random stuff – it’s just to help get into the habit of posting often. I admit that I create tons of posts that never get typed or written down. It’s become a bad habit and this challenge came at a good time to train myself to do a better job with the blog. You’re forewarned. A peek into my daily mind can be frightening and it’s definitely not for those that prefer a direct path. *laugh* A wonderful side effect to my illness is that the hamster wheel in my mind seldom ever stops going and more often than not there’s more than one wheel swirling. One of my best friends is really awesome at being able to hold conversations with me with multiple topics going at the same time (thank you for that Ma’am! It’s one of the few times I can let loose.). Very few people have this ability and it can be overwhelming. I’m being super honest and feeling a bit nekkid talking about it, since many people have made unflattering comments about how difficult it is to follow my train of thought or my habit of juggling several topics. Self censoring will stop for thirty days. Prepare yourself to travel down some unpredictable, amusing, and sometimes downright odd paths for the next month. *grin*

First up is actually business related. Today I took down a lot of scents from my website. I worked on inventory a few weeks ago, but put the last of it on hold while my aunt was visiting from The Sunshine State, and I finally took the plunge and finished it up. I had some expired FOs and EOs, but mostly it was just scents that no one ever expressed an interest in. It’s rather odd how attached I can get to these silly scents. I learned an interesting life lesson while doing inventory, too. When Citronella turns it has the ability to make you gag until you nearly vomit, just from a little whiff. Impressive. I kind of wonder if maybe that’s what it’s like for mosquitos. Maybe instead of being a repellant it’s actually just rancid to them and they fly off to puke their brains out. Serves the little (okay censoring that) right…Anyway, lesson learned. I’ll get some more next Spring, but for now, it’s removed from my site because I have no desire to smell it for a long time. Lol.

I’m debating trying another poll (maybe I’ll actually get a few participants this round *grin*) to see what FOs to keep around that haven’t sold but are still good. I couldn’t bring myself to nix all of the non sellers, because some smell so good. Plus, polls are fun IMO.

I have some ideas I’m stewing on for products to offer for the holidays, but I figure I better save some stuff for later in the ninth, so there is more than one post that’s actually business related. In light of that I’m signing off for the night, so happy pampering and you’ll hear from me again in a few hours. 😉
