We’re taking on water Cap’n!

I took advantage of a burst of energy to experiment on the ducky soaps. I admit…*hanging head* I got impatient. I knew what I should do, but didn’t know how long I’d have the energy to play, so I skipped the waiting period and a few other steps. Oops! *grin* I don’t think they’re going to turn out bad, but they won’t be as pretty as hoped. The great thing is that I can remake these, so no problem, and it gave me some much needed experience in trying to attach things to soap.

I made up a pretty batch of lavender low sweat soap (to make extra sure nothing goes funky on these) and scented them with bubblegum, plus the vanilla stabilizer, as an extra step to make sure they stay the way I make them. I don’t think a duck on a brown pond would be quite visually appealing. *cracking up* I waited a few minutes for the soap to set after pouring into round guest molds, but didn’t want to wait for them to nearly fully set. Plop! I eased the first duck into one of the rounds and it started to flip beak down, like it was alive and looking for a tasty morsel. That was one of the oddest sounds I ever heard while doing soaps. *grin* I finally figured out that a butter knife holds each one up rather well when balanced carefully. I still couldn’t resist taking a picture of the drunken duck though. *laugh* Rest assured that I pulled him back out, gave him a quick bath, and then helped him balance.

I have 3 impatiently done ducks and then one plain soap round to experiment with using the proper techniques. I shredded some leftover soaps to use around the meeting point of the ducks to the soap that will (hopefully lol) adhere with a little clear soap and give an even more festive feel to them. I admit that I never expected to grate soap. Thank you Mom for the years of sticking me with the cheese grating duty. *grin* It came in handy. I’ll post pics of the improved versions of the ducks hopefully tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy my unlucky duck and i wish you a steady, warm wind!

Salt Rub Recipe

As you may have noticed I don’t make salt scrubs to sell since sugar is gentler and I don’t have to worry about customers exfoliating with too much pressure.  Too much exfoliation goes beyond removing the dead skin from the surface – it often removes some of the healthy skin that you just exposed.  However, winter’s temperatures makes us bundle up and we don’t spot areas on our bodies that need a little TLC until it’s really noticeable, like dry elbows that suddenly catch on your thermal shirt when you try to put on.  *grin*

I thought that you might like an easy recipe that you can mix up in just moments and it goes a long way.  I ran across this recipe written by Lauren Cox in her EcoBeauty book, but honestly I change stuff in it every time.  *laugh*  I love that you can always change things to suit your needs and this is a really versatile recipe.  Her recipe calls for 2 cups of kosher salt, 1 cup of almond oil, and 2 to 3 drops of essential oil (optional).  I am really sensitive, so I use fine dead sea salts, but whatever kind you like is fine except really coarse salt, like rock salt or large grain dead sea salt that resembles small rocks.  I love to switch the salt for Epsom Salt, too, which isn’t really a salt (it’s actually magnesium sulfate), but has so many anti-inflammatory properties (totally random here, but don’t you hate when a word doesn’t have a set rule of hyphen or no hyphen?  When I worked in a neurology office all of the literature spelled it as “antiinflammatory”, but almost everywhere else it has a hyphen, so I am always going back and forth…anyway lol).  Almond Oil is usually really called Sweet Almond Oil and you can find it at health stores, some craft stores like Hobby Lobby (although they’re pretty small usually), and even our favorite Walmart started selling it near the vitamins.  Essential Oils (EOs) are getting easier and easier to get hold of now, so when you’re not having to buy a lot of them to use in stuff to sell, you can totally get away with a small bottle from Hobby Lobby or your health food store.  I like to use Peppermint EO as a pick-me-up, but sometimes I even use an FO like chocolate when I’m more into pleasing all of my senses.  *smile*

Stir everything together into a thick paste and put it in a clean jar with a tight lid.  This mixture can be kept in a cool and dry spot for a month or two.  (The time depends on what you put in it since some things spoil faster.  Thankfully mine have never gotten moldy or anything, but it gets a really weird, dusty smell that’s hard to describe when it turns.  Basically if it doesn’t smell like it did when you made it, toss it!)  You use it just like a sugar scrub, so take a handful and massage it into your skin when you’re in the shower.  I wouldn’t want to sit in the mixture with a bunch of dead skin it took off, so I don’t advise a bath, but that’s me.  The author recommends to start at your feet, but I can tell you from personal experience that you really shouldn’t do that!  First off, when you start at the bottom you’re less likely to work all of the way up.  It’s one of those odd human nature things.  Second, scrubbing your feet in the shower with anything that has an oil in it is seriously dangerous.  I love Lauren Cox’s recipes, but that instruction makes me freak out.  *grin*  Anyway, do your feet when you’re sitting all comfy and can remain seated until they’re dry or covered, pretty please.  Back to the instructions…massage it into your body and rinse really well with warm water.  It has a tendency to cling like sand in your shorts after being at the beach, so take your time.  *laugh*  One key thing that she writes is to not use soap afterward, because it will remove the oil and the moisturizing benefits.  When you run your hand over your skin it’ll have a silky and “coated” feeling, and the water will bead up on the surface due to the oil.  It seems totally counterproductive, but this protective barrier actually keeps moisture in your skin and makes it look healthier.

Although you can massage it over your general body (no face or delicate zones), I personally only use salt scrub on the really dry zones that need the extra umph.  I use a sugar scrub for the large zones.  Please keep in mind when you use a salt scrub to use really light pressure.  Most people are really uncoordinated when using just the ring finger and pinky, so those are the two fingers I use when I massage salts.  I look like a freak, but no one sees, so who cares?!  *grin*  Play with the recipe too!  Some days I scoop a bit out into a bowl and stir in some dark cocoa powder to it, and use that mixture.  I love adding a bit of honey to it too.  If you ever want some ideas for what might be a beneficial additive just take a look at the “Natural Benefits” page of my website or get hold of me.  I love to talk with customers, especially about benefits.

I hope you enjoy trying this out and find the perfect blend for you.  If you ever have trouble getting hold of the ingredients, don’t hesitate to contact me.  I’m help you get what you’re looking for.  Happy pampering!!

New Ingredients

I shopped in my first flash sale. *grin* I bought way too much, as usual, especially considering how much product just got tossed for being out dated. Lol. I just couldn’t resist a sale price with a rebate and a coupon. *laughing at myself*

Anyway….lol. I’ve been really amused by fish in a bag soaps. (See an example under my ideas board on Pinterest if you want.) Basically a little toy goldfish gets embedded in clear or light blue soap in a cello bag, like the fish in a bag that you win at the fair. I think those would be really cute for Spring/Summer and would be a really cute accompaniment to my Worms in Dirt soap.

I’m also going to try to make thumbprint cookie soaps. Basically the colored Shea soap has an indent in the center and a colored clear soap gets poured into the dip, looking like a jelly. The example I saw is gorgeous, so I think they’d look amazing in baskets. I’m kind of worried that the cookie will have the texture of those horrendous bath biscuits that I tried awhile back. *shudder* That is one product I am nervous about testing. Lol.

I’m also super excited, like bouncing in my seat excited, to have gotten a great deal on some one ounce jars so I can put samples in jars too, instead of the bottles. I’ve phased out bottles for lotions on my site, unless requested, since jars let the user get all of the lotion out easily. I love those tiny tester jars I used for the craft fair and am really glad that I can offer these.

I got two new colors and one is a neon hot pink that responds to black lights. I really love pink, but the pink that I have is pretty soft and turns more of a fuchsia if I use more of it, so I hope this is as pretty as the examples I’ve seen make it look.

Another super neat item I got is an orifice reducer for the 1 oz bottles of massage/body oils. I’ve tried for a long time to figure out how to keep from accidentally pouring too much oil into the hand. I had a tester pour almost half a bottle on accident when she tried to use it after shaving and it really concerns me that others might also be having trouble. This should make the oil come out in at least half of the volume that it does and the lids that I have on hand should fit on top without any problem. Yay!

Of course I also got a few new FOs since they are on sale. *embarrassed smile* The first is Sugar & Spice, which should be like spun sugar, cardamom, and coriander. I’m hoping that it doesn’t have the dry and dusty spiciness from Naughty or Nice and Over the Hill. The second is Ooh La La, which is a fun name, so I may just use that. *grin* I’ve wanted this FO since it first debuted last month. Juicy strawberry with dark chocolate. *sigh* I’ve tried to make a good chocolate covered strawberry and it wasn’t quite like smelling one of my favorite treats, so I’m really excited to get to try out a professional version. The last FO is called Hot Stuff. *cracking up* As you most likely know I love masculine scents, so whenever the wholesaler offers me a free sample FO I usually pick a masculine one. This has peppercorn, cinnamon, cashmere, and amber. That’s an intriguing combination to me and I have a lot of hope for it. My dream Scotsman smells a little spicy, sweet, woodsy, and has a musk undertone. *grin* I mean, he needs to smell as sexy as the kilt looks…*wiggling eyebrows with a smirk*

Lastly I just couldn’t resist getting the remaining ingredients that I need to make some cocoa massage melts. This is one item that I really look forward to testing myself! Cocoa butter, beeswax (I got pellets which are supposed to be a lot easier to melt), and sweet almond oil. If they come out well, then I’ll sell a few of them in small cello bags, I think. Some people use ice cube trays for the small molds, but I think this may be the perfect time to use the small beach and flower silicone molds that I got last year.

I’m pretty happy that I was able to replace a lot of my frequently used items like jars while on sale, since they’re the same price as before the wholesaler’s price increases, and now I won’t have to raise my prices on my favorite items. *happy dance* I really hope that the new things turn out well, so I can add them to my improved site. *grin* The flash sale was pretty fun, so if I can get my helper to come back (she hasn’t been here since she went on summer break and started back to school) I might have to see if a flash sale would work for my stuff. I think it’d be really neat to market one.

If you’re going to get hit by a snow storm tonight like we are, then I wish you a safe and warm night. If not, well…then I’m jealous. 😉 Goodnight!

Pinterest and Changes

As many of you know I finally established a presence on Pinterest. Thank you so much to those of you that are all ready following and sharing my pins. It means a lot that I have you supporting me through new endeavors.

Other than pinning my products on there what else would you like to see there? Do you want pics of ingredients that I’m researching or is that too boring for that format? Pics from other websites of shapes I’m thinking about or scent combos?

I’ve worked hard at updating my website the last few days and it looks so much cleaner and organized now. My OCD was going nuts when I would get on the site. Lol. I have the HTML code (mostly – still needs a bit more work) to add a pin it widget to the site, but wondered if anyone would really want/need it added? I have the pin option in my viewer toolbar, but I don’t know if everyone uses one or if users would prefer it on the page. I really appreciate any input on this and on the posting preferences.

I really shook things up with my lotions. I spent days doing inventory for my end of year taxes (yeah, I procrastinated lol) and when I discovered that I only sold a couple of bottles of lotion, mostly all lotions were sold in jars, I decided that something needed to change. I looked into a drop down menu option per product, at a friend’s smart recommendation, but found that it’s just not an option for me sadly. I went ahead and removed all bottled lotion prices, except for the samples, to get rid of so much duplication. I have no problem bottling lotions if ordered that way and stated such on the site. I just need to organize and streamline a bit. I also removed items that haven’t sold well or disappointed me. For the EOY I have to take an inventory of what is on hand and found a lot of spoiled or near spoiled products. I won’t offer an item that may have quality concerns. I noticed that products with EOs added were all spoiled, so now I know to get an antibacterial or something to add to them. *writes note to self for a new research topic* Mostly I had a lot of stuff that just sat around not selling, so they didn’t get remade, and I don’t have full confidence in their quality after the time frame. I added a note to ask if an item isn’t posted anymore that people are interested in. I really hate taking away that extra bit of variety that I offered, it’s almost like hiding a child that I love *grin*, and was more sad that they weren’t enjoyed by people than the hundreds of dollars lost.

Would you like me to thin down the FO pages? Remove the ones that don’t sell? Also, do you like the basket/combo page? I wondered if I should bother with it or just list non-product options that can be selected for building a basket…?

As always I truly appreciate any and all input, plus the time to read this. In looking through the blog for pics to pin I found myself grinning like a simpleton. It’s quite awesome to have a dialogue with those that keep my little business, and me, going. Thank you and thank you for my first pin followers!! You guys rock. Yep, time to pull it out – *breaks out into my nerd dance* 🙂

Worms in dirt

I am so excited over this idea. *squirming with excitement* I’m kind of embarrassed that it took this long to figure this out, but what matters is that I have. I have looked at so many creature toys to embed in the Dirt soap and haven’t found any that jumped out to me. Until now! A little out of the box thinking led me to the sporting goods department. Those worm lures (without hooks) will look so cute and realistic for the Dirt soaps. I’ve been scouring online stores to find the perfect colors and sizes. Don’t you think it’d make the soap that much more fun to use if there’s a realistic worm while you’re “using dirt” to wash up? *grin* I’m going to soak them to make sure anything funky comes off before I embed them, of course. I’m still trying to decide which mold to use though. Larry thinks the guest rounds which the worms chopped up in them (I’m sorry but that grosses me out even though they’re not real. Lol!), I just don’t know that cut ones would be quite so identifiable for kids. A bar soap would work perfectly and I can make the worm do some interesting shapes in them, but part of me wants to make the soaps even more exciting. My stars are too small (have to dice with those too) and some of my bigger ones would be thoroughly inappropriate to me, like the ballerina molds. *cracking up* Any opinions on what would look cute if I use the clear bars? I’m thinking maybe a goldish brown (just because the clear soaps always look kind of jewel toned anyway), but I’ve thought about swirling some solid green soap across the top like an oozing mossy bit of fun. 🙂 There are just too many possibilities. *grin* I just had to share my exciting epiphany while working out the rest. Any input/ideas are appreciated, as always!

Monsters Away Labels

I can’t resist sharing a picture of the labels for the Monsters Away Spray. I decided to change the font to match the fun product and I think this is absolutely perfect. *happy dance*

Monsters Away Spray (finally!)

I finally did it! *happy dance* I made a Monsters Away Spray that I actually like. *grin* It’s a combination of Lavender and Vanilla EO/FO blend (Sleep Time) with an equal amount of Deluxe Vanilla FO. The vanilla doesn’t overpower the lavender, but definitely helps to mellow it out, and it’s a rather comforting combo in my opinion. I read a long time ago that vanilla is the most comforting scent on Earth, so I knew that I wanted it in the spray. As much as I don’t care for lavender it is so successful at calming and relaxing (as an EO), that I just had to use it too. I thought about adding a little bit of another FO, a super soft floral or maybe a hint of Arabian Nights, but think that this is pretty close to scents that little kids are used to, so it might be more comforting without making it complex. I ended up using the maximum additive allowance because I want the kids to “smell it working” and know that they’re scaring off those monsters. 🙂

I admit that as usual I had a few uh oh moments while making this batch. I used my handy dandy blender and it incorporated the oils perfectly. However, I totally forgot how bad the spray base bubbles up. *cracking up* Thankfully I got a few pictures before the bubbles filled half of the bowl. Keep in mind that I was blending in my bath salts blending bowl, so this isn’t your standard kitchen bowl either. It’s huge. Lol. It took two hours for the bubbles to go down! Once the bubbles went down I ladled the spray into a measuring cup to fill each bottle. Let me again mention that I decided to use my bath salt blending bowl, which I sometimes have to use an ice pick in to break up clumps. Yep, I’m brain dead sometimes. All I thought was “here’s a big bowl that I can put chemicals in without any worries about contamination. Yay!”. *Facepalm* As I tipped the bowl to ladle the last out I noticed that the counter was wet. I got a bit over zealous breaking clumps at some point and poked completely through the bowl. Thankfully that was an easy mess to clean and the dog didn’t try to push me out of the way to lick it up like he tries with lotion, so on the doh factor this was pretty low. *grin*

Overall I’m really happy with this spray. I’ve made some literal stinkers before, so I was worried about this combo stinking too. If this is a good seller I think I’ll come up with an alternative scent option too, since some kids don’t like lavender. I love that this works to ease fears, helps parents and kids feel like they’re doing something instead of being helpful against those fears, and a bit of aromatherapy for natural aromatherapy benefits. I really hope that this is received well. I think out of all products I’ve made this is the one that really makes me feel good. 🙂

A Living Thing

This post is more of a reflection than a rambling about my excitement or another stumble in my journey. My GoPayment (aka GP) app updated and when I was entering a charge today (well, yesterday if you’ve slept, but whatever) I discovered that a new feature is pictures. It sounds so trivial, but instead of strictly selecting the product codes for an order I can now add a picture for each product which is seriously handy with my system. It took at least an hour to get all of my codes, descriptions, and prices entered originally, so I’m definitely not knocking that work, but there are a few products with close enough names that I’ve made some mistakes and love anything that I can use in a double check system.

Anyway, my iPhone had died a few weeks back and although channeling my inner nerd helped bring me back from despair (thank you iCloud and ioS 4+ for allowing me to save directly to it all of this time), I still managed to not upload all of my business pics to my new phone. When I saw that I could use pics on GP, and face palmed a bit once I noticed I didn’t have the pics, I realized that most things would be on my site or blog and that I could just grab them there. I know, I know…it’d really have been quicker to just go drop my pics from my computer into my cloud, but that took a few hours to dawn on me and wouldn’t have allowed for my insomnia-fueled thoughts. *ahem* Soooo….I hit the sites and starting grabbing pics. The neat thing is that little bits kept jumping out at me and I found myself reading through things as if I hadn’t been the one to write them. (It’s true that an intriguing side effect of a few of my medications and my illness is to spontaneously seriously suck at remembering stuff, regardless of my former IQ, but it is really surprising to have no recollection of something. It’s kind of like the whole Jekyll and Hyde thing without all of the nasty story lines thankfully.) It makes for an interesting look at yourself and your creativity though.

I realized that my business (any business really, but I’m being totally self absorbed here, so we’ll stick with me and mine for now *grin*) is more like a living thing than I could have ever predicted or expected. The more attention I can give it, the more it thrives. The thought that I pour into all aspects shows as each part develops. The more that I “water the garden” with my energy, research, and vulnerabilities, the more it blossoms. When I was self employed as a medical billing consultant I was very proud of my accomplishments, but never had this awe of what could come from my hard work. It was simply something I was good at and I could sometimes help others through it. This business, this tiny business that started with a couple of soaps and a ziploc of bath salts, is completely about helping others in some way while also learning how to be creative again. Consulting was never a beautiful flower just waiting to be nurtured, growing with me as I made my way. It just existed. It certainly didn’t celebrate any of my creativity.

It’s a magical moment when a person can read months of experiences and smile because they can suddenly see how far they’ve come or become excited all over again about an idea. Being creative has helped me learn to not be so critical of myself and to let others see some of the vulnerabilities. It’s actually incredibly hard for me to admit to my failings, which helped me push myself so hard to excel at billing and to overcome some of my limitations. Sharing my experiences behind making the products has made me see that it’s okay to make mistakes and have bad days, while celebrating the amazing moments in the journey.

I never would have guessed that I’d spend hours researching EOs to help with Rosacea or oils that work as anti inflammatories, or the even more previous hours spent making perfectly imperfect creations. I never knew that growing a business could help me grow too. Because of you very wonderful and important people that have encouraged me with my venture I have learned that I can still have a good impact on others even when I’m stuck in a wheelchair or a walker. That means a whole lot more than a perfect looking soap.

I hope that everyone gets to experience a chance to stand back and see how far they’ve come, what they’ve learned, and cheer over their successes. Even more than that I hope that we all learn to love our imperfect selves. While we’re all being thoughtful we can also enjoy a relaxing bath and then lather up with a rich and healing lotion. I have a great connection with someone that can hook you up! 😉

A Day of Disasters (a long story)

I was finally able to experiment with my new FOs yesterday and I swear a lightning cloud was hovering over me the entire time, striking every time I turned.  *grin*  I had to start using a walker due to my injuries in December and this was the first time that I actually got to make some products with the handy-dandy device.

Things went well at first actually.  I sat on the walker’s seat while scooping out lotion and with a little craning I could see the readout on the scale (we’ll just say that I’m fun-sized, so sitting down puts me at a disadvantage in “a bigger world” lol).  I made a batch of goat’s milk lotions with emulsifying wax and although I had to stand and carry the pan to the stove I was feeling pretty confident.  Buh me – I should know better *grin*.  As the liquids started to melt I happily started whisking the mixture while sitting.  Yep, I bet you guessed it…that’s when some of the lotion splattered me in the face since I was just above the lip of the pan.  I decided to abandon sitting then and balanced the whisk on the pan’s handle so I could go measure out FOs into the measuring cup, since it’d only be a few more minutes before the mixture would be incorporated enough to add the additives.  As I turned to the other counter the whisk fell off and as is human nature I lunged to grab it before it hit the floor.  (It doesn’t really make sense, but anything starts to fall I tend to jump lol.)  The whisk bounced off of my hand and splattered lotion across the side of the stove, under the stove’s top (in what used to be such a small opening but it appears to be the perfect size for stuff to fly into), across two walls, a cat scratcher, and even the laundry basket (thank goodness I didn’t have clean things in there at that moment!).

As you can imagine lunging isn’t so smart with injured feet, so of course I stumbled a bit and slammed my hand into the cat scratcher.  I never knew that the side of cardboard was so sturdy until then…*grin*  Anyway, I managed to grab a towel and start cleaning it, but then discovered that my dog apparently loves the taste of lotion.  *rolling eyes*  I scrambled to try to get it all up before he could any more of it, but he’s not small, so he managed to push me over to go for the side of the stove.  *sigh*  Thankfully I had just finished cleaning off the basket, which is a pretty big one when sat on its side, so I pushed it over there to block him from getting near everything.

However, while the clean up fiasco was going on the lotion was still warming on the stove, and of course I totally forgot about it when I suddenly had a mess to clean.  Once that mess was cleaned up (still had to keep the basket there because the dog was still intent on finding any traces lol) I looked into the pan and saw that the ingredients had melted to the point that they then separated back out.  *face palming*  The last time that this happened to me (I was making some soaps while the lotion ingredients warmed that time) I couldn’t figure out how to save the batch and lost it all, but I wasn’t giving up without a fight this time since there was so much of it.  Anyway, I thought of the cool immersion blender I started using for incorporating the FOs and grabbed it really quick.  Did you know that if the little holes on the base of the attachment are outside of liquid then it acts like leaving the top off of your regular blender?  I sure didn’t, but I do now.  *cracking up*  So I stood there holding the dripping blender over the mixture in the measuring cup in one hand and trying to wipe lotion and wax off of my standing mixer, that wall (seriously…I think my walls started multiplying and jumping out to get dirty), and of course I had to try to clear the droplets off of my glasses.  Have you ever noticed that glasses are like magnets for stuff to splatter?  Sorry, a little off topic there.  I also discovered that a droplet of lotion had missed going into the open brand new bottle of FO that was sitting on the counter by mere centimeters.  At least that’s one disaster that was averted!  Anyway, the blender blended things perfectly as they cooled a little *mock wiping brow with relief*.

Thankfully I had no other problems with the two jars of lotion I was making and when I poured them they looked beautiful.  I’m so concerned with making sure there’s at least a little bit more than the labelled amount in each product that I make a few extra ounces than called for, which was lucky with lotion coating half of my kitchen, but wasn’t enough to make even a small jar to sell.  I decided to use the left over lotion to test the new Fruit Loops FO so I could use it for some soaps soon.  First, I found that when I pulled the pan off the stove I had forgotten to turn off the burner.  Second, it solidified (still separate too since only what was in the cup for the two jars had gotten blended), so I decided to pop it in the microwave in a smaller measuring cup to warm it back up.  Third, it melted a LOT quicker than I expected and got boiling hot (not good).  Thankfully this bit was for me to test, so I decided it was a great time to see if the blender would still incorporate them if they were that hot.  By the way, the lesson about needing to submerge that hole had faded from my memory for the moment while I went into crisis mode, so of course I tried the blender.  *grin*  Not much lotion was in this, so only a couple drops splattered.  I got my itty bitty whisk out that I used to use for blending FOs into lotion and put some muscle into it.  As soon as the FO blended with the lotion the scent became overwhelming.  I got an instant migraine and it was like I stuck the stuff up my nose.  Not even a full ML of FO even and it was this strong.  *shaking head*  I have to figure out what FOs I want to mix with it to see if I can mellow this out, which is really disappointing because I was planning to use it for my first batch of ducky soaps.  (Once I have a plan I really don’t like changing them, just part of my personality no matter how much I try to work on it.)  Meh.

Anyway, I left it sitting by the others, lids off, so they could all cool and set up.  As I washed up all of my utensils I noticed that my clear jar of tester was now two-toned.  The lotion and additives had separated while cooling.  It took stirring it with a tiny spatula about every two minutes for the next half hour for it to stay incorporated and set up properly.  At this point I was exhausted, mentally and physically, and figured it wasn’t overly smart to touch anything else in that room, let alone make anything else.  *laugh*  As I dried my hands I looked over at the amber jars of perfectly poured lotions and there was a dark stripe.  Yep, I feared the worst…it had separated while I dealt with everything else and this order would take even longer to fill.  I got the tiny spatula back out and broke the surface of that smooth lake.  I went half way down to see how much had separated.  Not. A. Drop.  Seriously!  I never noticed, since I’ve never had so many disasters to make me start looking around for others, that the amber jars have a dark area right before they bend to come up to the lip.  *sigh*  I tried to smooth it back out, but it’s like trying to smooth marshmallow creme.  *grin*  Thankfully I can confidently say that the lotion’s quality is good, no matter if one isn’t nearly as pretty as the other.

Today I used some of my test portion and as long as I hold my breath, and cover up the areas it’s on, I can tolerate the lotion enough to not waste it.  I’m really happy to say that despite all of the disasters it has that thick and awesome texture of cold cream that I can get with my immersion blender.  That hour was one of the longest I have ever experienced.  *laugh*  I’m very thankful that I don’t usually have quite that bad of luck.  I hope you have a wonderful (and mess free) weekend!  I’ll be avoiding the kitchen.  *wink*

Sniffing Dirt

I’ve had trouble starting this blog entry because I’ve been selfishly sniffing the four new FOs that I ordered recently and enjoying how I keep finding different notes in them.  *grin*  I managed to control my spending on them last order, but I just got a newsletter with new FOs just in time for Valentine’s…*dreamy sigh*  I just love how a few drops can come together to remind you or a memory or encompasses a feeling.  I’m using that as my excuse for being addicted to collecting FOs.  Lol.

Anyway, I am so excited that the Dirt FO is a really interesting scent.  To me it’s more like the smell of dirt beneath your nails after working in the garden instead of the pungent freshly dug notes that I expected.  It’s a bit woodsy with almost a hint of musk.  When I sniff there are notes that dance around like when a word is at the tip of your tongue, but you can’t quite figure it out.  Larry rolled his eyes and took a few whiffs last night since I wouldn’t let him change out of his work clothes until he gave his impressions on the new FOs.  To his nose (admittedly he comes up with some odd comments and impressions about some scents, but he reinforced mine, so I’m including them lol) Dirt smells like when he’s stacking freshly cut lumber.  There’s that dry woodsy note, but then that earthiness that surrounds him when he’s in the timber.  I never expected such dominant woodsy notes, but they really give the scent some depth.  I’m not so sure now that kids will want to use it except to be defiantly washing with dirt, but I think I have a way around that, which I’ll mention later.

The Jasmine FO is simply beautiful.  I haven’t decided what I want to name it, but it is one of the nicest florals I’ve ever smelled.  It doesn’t have the complex notes of the Moonlight Path knock offs or the cloying sweetness that can overtake a gorgeous honeysuckle, making this FO incredibly unique.  It’s bright and joyful while seeming so elegant and feminine.  *happy sigh*  I want to make a batch of lotion with it to see if I get more detailed impressions of it.

Bubblegum (may change to Gumballs) is more of a dead ringer for those delightful little orbs of happiness I used to get for change as a kid instead of the Bazooka variation that I have on hand.  Admittedly they’re somewhat close and I may have to do a scent test with some helpers to see if they can tell the difference, but it’s a really happy FO.

*drum roll* To the best of the bunch…Fruit Loops!  I’ll have to rename it just so that no one could ever get snippy over trademarks, but holy smokes is it spot on!!  *big grin*  It has so many scent notes without being overwhelming.  It took Larry several sniffs to start to pick out the different fruit, but it isn’t one of those fruit combinations that gives you a headache (thankfully!  I’m hoping that is the case while working with it too!).  The bright citrus and berry notes with a generous helping of sugar to it.  I fit the stereotype of a girl since I love anything chocolate, but this may be my absolute favorite non-chocolate FO.  *happy sigh* An exciting idea I had while making myself light-headed (and maybe making me at risk for an intervention lol) is that I may mix a few drops of Dirt FO in with this and name it something like Gummy Worms in the Dirt (yeah, working title, but gets the idea across).  That’ll incorporate the amusingly defiant dirty name that catches a kid’s eye with the attractive fruity notes that makes it a really fun scent to actually use (by the way, I know a 40-something “kid” that would grin at getting something with that name, so I think I’m onto a keeper of an idea *grin*).  I think this will be the perfect FO to use for the new ducky soaps too!  *breaking out the happy dance*

Since I’m on the computer I may go fantasize about another gift certificate to my wholesaler.  They came out with a dark chocolate covered strawberry FO that I really want an excuse to order.  *grin*  I’ve tried several times now to come up with a good custom blend of that since it’s one of my really special indulgences, but I could never really captured it.  Maybe I’ll just look into vacation deals for Branson so I can smell (okay, okay, so I can eat) the real deal.  I hope that you’re having a cozy weekend too full of happy scents!
