The Roller Coaster

After hitting the one year mark since we began this journey I realized that I’ve gotten depressed due to not progressing during this time.  Our adoption journey has been quite an emotional roller coaster.  When I realized how bad my first feeling from contact from the social worker was complete and utter fear, I knew that I had some work to do on changing my perspective.

I was completely unable to be rational when I saw that she had emailed us.  Terrified that it would mean we have been denied, scared that our dream will get shattered, and honestly a bit panicked because this single person has the dream of our adoption in her hands.  We’re past the happy and hopeful honeymoon stage, while we are now in the worry and pain stage instead.

Adoption is completely worth everything we have gone through and I wholeheartedly believe in it, and I will hopefully be able to advocate for these children in some way someday.  The waiting part, especially once it goes beyond a month without hearing anything, is pretty much like having PMS, in my opinion.  Sorry male readers, but I’m totally going there since it’s a great comparison of feelings.  Anyway, after that honeymoon phase the PMS sneaks in.  You notice that you’re a little more emotional than usual; you can cry from either a sweet or heartbreaking commercial even.  You then hear that internal clock ticking down to THE DAY, but you have absolutely no idea if the train is running on time, so you’re on edge.  Sarcasm drips from your comments without you meaning to be that way, so then you withdraw to keep from sucking the sun out of someone else’s day.  Sometimes you swing from happy to sad, over to being sensitive to every little comment or action, get withdrawn and cranky, and you then go straight to being miserable and on edge.  Tick tock.  Tick tock.  You feel like you’re losing all control over your emotions and it just keeps getting louder.  Tick tock.  Tick tock…

This too shall pass.  Yep.  It’s still an emotional roller coaster regardless of the encouraging quote.  You could throw glitter at this mess and it’ll just be a shiny mess now, so you cry when you watch a car commercial with parents saying goodbye as their kid heads off to college.

Even though this sucks, deep down you know it’ll get better.  You just have to hold on until that train comes to town.  You just have to wait for the adoption to progress to the next stage.  Try and find a way to drown out the sound of the clock; cover everything in glitter and crank up cheerful Christmas music if that’s what it takes to make you feel more in control of your emotions.  I’m taking inventory of the deep freeze and food expiration dates, while listening to Celtic Thunder, to help get me through today.  I’ll transfer all the info to a spreadsheet tomorrow, so I’ll feel a little more in control yet again.  Take it day by day and lean on that support system you wrote about in like the fourth section of the adoption paperwork.  Find your glitter and empower yourself to get through this.  You’ve come this far, so don’t you dare give up; and I will be saying that exact thing to myself over and over.  A child depends on your ability to find a way through this.  Like the old saying goes – you can eat a whole bear all by yourself.  You just have to take one bite at a time.

Confetti Birthday Pancakes Recipe by Leah

Confetti Bday Pancakes

Birthdays are a big deal in our home.  The girls wake up to balloons on the floor of their bedroom and a curtain of streamers hanging over the door.  It’s fun, colorful, exciting, and really sets the mood for the day.  You know what else is all those things?  Pancakes.  Confetti pancakes!  Each birthday we indulge in a stack of festive and cheerful confetti pancakes.  They taste like cake!  They’re certainly an indulgence but birthdays are all about indulgence.

Confetti Birthday Pancakes

Yield: approximately 20 pancakes

1 box Pillsbury Funfettie cake mix

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/3 cup canola oil

3 eggs

2 1/3 cups milk

1/2 cup sprinkles

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt and cake mix.  Set aside.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the oil eggs and milk.
  3. Add the wet ingredients in to the dry ingredients and mix just until combined.  Fold in sprinkles.
  4. Heat a griddle to about 250 degrees F and spray with cooking spray.
  5. Ladle the pancake batter onto the hot pan and cook the pancakes until bubbles form in the batter.  Flip the pancake and cook for an additional minute or until cooked through.

The pancakes are so sweet on their own that we don’t add any syrup.  We typically serve with a strawberry fruit compote or strawberry or cherry yogurt.

Two of My Favorite GMM Videos

I was a very happy Mythical Beast on the 9th when Good Mythical Morning (GMM) had Kelsea Ballerini as their guest on two of their YouTube segments.  I thought a couple of funny videos might help with those possible green beer hangovers.  *grin*  They both have a country flavor, but I think they’d be hilarious even if I wasn’t a country fan.

If you aren’t familiar with their channel, GMM is hosted by “internetainers” Rhett and Link.  They have 3 segments each weekday with a “show after the show” on their GMMore channel.  They guys are known to do a lot of “will it” themed taste tests, games, skits as other characters, and have their own merchandise (L spoiled me with some merch I wanted ever since I discovered them and I am currently dressed in these *grin*), a book, a bunch of albums (some as singles), weekly podcasts, and two seasons of their Buddy System series on YouTube Red.  They have been friends since they were kids and somehow have been able to work together in different ventures for most of their lives without ruining their friendship.  GMM is a favorite YouTube show around the world and us fans refer to ourselves as “Mythical Beasts”.

Now, back to the fun part!  They changed things up this season and are having more guests on the show, and when country singer Kelsea Ballerini was on they brought out their country sides.  In the first segment they create country songs out of online complaints and in the second the guys take up their country singer characters (a duo named Rabbit Lightning) to sing backup during Kelsea’s “I Hate Love Songs” performance.  (I added the link to the picture of each segment, so just click the picture for a new tab that goes right to it.)  Hopefully these will help you start your day off with a smile (and maybe convert a few more people into Mythical Beasts *grin*)!

Chocolate Strawberry Nutella Cake Recipe by Leah

Delicious!  This cake is delicious!  I wanted to make a dessert with Nutella but nothing very appealing was coming to mind.  I wanted a showstopper.  So, I turned to my trusty friend, Google.  Believe me when I say there are A LOT of Nutella desserts out there.  If you’re ever feeling the need to sit and drool at your screen just type Nutella desserts and lose yourself in the hazelnutty goodness.

My search eventually led me to Pioneer Woman and her Chocolate Strawberry Nutella Cake.  This cake was inspired.  I knew immediately it was what I was looking for.  Everyone that ate it agreed.     Be sure to check her website for the cake recipe and beautiful pictures.  The only thing I changed was to use my favorite chocolate layer cake recipe.

Chocolate Strawberry Nutella Cake

1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 cup hot water

1/2 cup sour cream

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed

3 large eggs, room temperature

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 1/2 cups Nutella

2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced

1/4 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla

whipped cream

2 cups heavy cream

1/2 cup powdered sugar

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease two 9-inch round baking pans with butter and line the pan bottoms with parchment paper.  Grease and dust the pans.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the cocoa powder and the hot water and stir until smooth.  Let cool to room temperature  Stir in the sour cream and vanilla.  Set aside.
  3. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachement, beat the butter on medium-high until smooth and shiny.  Add both sugars and beat until the mixture is fluffy, about 3 minutes.  Add the eggs one at a time, beating for 30 seconds between each addition.
  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.  With the mixer running on low, add a third of the flour mixture to the egg mixture, followed by a third of the cocoa mixture.  Scrape down the sides of the bowl and repeat the process twice.  Continue to beat on low until the batter is fully mixed, about 20 seconds more.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans.  Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of each cake comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
  6. Transfer the cake pans to wire racks and let cool for 20 minutes.  Run a knife around the edges of each pan, invert the cakes onto wire racks and peel off the parchment.  Flip the cakes back over and let cool completely.

Stir the strawberries with the sugar and the vanilla.  Let them macerate for 15 minutes, then drain off the excess juice.

whipped cream

Whip the cream with the powdered sugar.

  1. Turn one cake layer upside down on a serving platter.  Spread half the Nutella all over the surface.  Spread on half the whipped cream and top with half the strawberries.

2. Place the other layer upside down on top and repeat with the rest of the Nutella, whipped cream, and strawberries.  Keep chilled until serving.  Cut with a serrated knife.

Witchwood and Rustic Retreat

Gaming Logo

I decided to wander through a few areas to get inspiration for a renovation of our landscaping at home, so after I hit Petit Mort for this week’s 50L sale, I wandered out into their new sim.  The new sim is shared with Oubliette and they have made it into a beautiful sim to wander, not just shop.  It was a little busy, so I stopped in the woods for a quick picture, and then headed out.  Note: I was feeling sassy the other night and found this amusing little outfit at Epoch.  The bum has a smart aleck comment about rolling “some”.  Hence the peace and love pose, but the real focus is their incredibly gorgeous sim!

(If you’ve been following my blog long term, then you have probably read about the incredible help Marinol has been for my Fibro and vomiting, and that I have found a ton of international research about strains of the real stuff that is cultivated to combat Fibro symptoms without the high, so I’m a supporter of getting medicinal approved.  I totally understand that everyone has their own feelings about this and that is totally cool.  I respect yours and appreciate your respect of mine.  I do tend to get sassy items about it in SL just because it amuses me.  lol)

I usually change outfits every day, but hit the sale first thing, so I didn’t have a chance to change.  Therefore I TPed home, threw on one of my favorite Facepalm tees (okay, they’re all favorites since they’re so sarcastic *laugh*), and then I wandered the new-to-me sim of Rustic Retreat.  This sim is absolutely incredible!  There is a cute little fire pit area at the landing point with built in poses in the seats around it, a peacock wandering about, and a great blend of plants.

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_006

I wandered down the path behind the hangout and found the most enchanting areas.  Straight forward led to a gorgeous waterfall by Sweet Revolutions, while down another path was an enchanting area of statues, plants that shoot beautiful sparks all about, and an arch that reminded me of Stargate.  There are so many stunning spots, including a serene fountain in the woods with a few beams of light breaking through the canopy.  This is how I want our landscape to feel!

So beautiful, right?!  Perfect for RP photo shoots, enjoying the peaceful feeling of the sim, or even a romantic adventure.

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_029

It’s hard to show the beauty when it’s static pixels.  When touched the bud started shooting these balls of light that bounced all about.

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_034Bre 3 15 18 stoner_039

Please note that I used the Annan Adored Lights Explosion WL for these pics.  Although the place is stunning with CalWL, I thought this area deserved a windlight that celebrated the magical feeling of the built in lights.  The next time I change Bre into a fairy I am SO coming back to this spot! *grin*

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_010

I couldn’t resist the Indiana Jones vibe of this pathway.  And in case you’re trying to read today’s chosen sarcasm, the tee says “This too shall pass.  It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass.” *laugh* Now that I know how beautiful this sim is I will dress up for the ocassion next time.

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_024

Bre 3 15 18 stoner_022

Here’s the gorgeous waterfall area.  This would make an awesome proposal or a small partnering ceremony location, in my opinion.  I’m definitely going to park Bre here while I work on sorting my inventory, from now on!

I hope you take a few moments, Second Lifers, to check out this amazing sim and if you have a few spare lindens, there’s a wishing well near the path for donations.

Introduction to Sylo

On SL I have three roommates at our incredible property and one that I didn’t get to share a picture of before is Sylo, my “sister from another mister”.  *grin*  We’ve been friends for a long time, even in RL (real life), and we’re collaborating on making our own vignettes for some photo shoots.  All of us spend a lot of time together in both worlds, so you’ll be seeing Sylo, Luke, and Zilch in a lot of my posts.  If you three are reading this, please know I truly appreciate your friendship and all of our adventures!

For You to See Someday

Dear Kiddo,

Well, I’ve had the “It’s a Girl” banner up for three and a half months now.  In two days it will be a solid year since we started this journey to find and meet you.  In a way it all feels so unreal now.  The paperwork was turned in some time ago, then fixed and turned in again; we made your room move-in-ready and I have a bag full of paint cards for you to go through to decide what color would make it truly your room; and I have way too many party ideas to go through with you for any party you want to have.   Well, one has to be a glow in the dark party because, um, it’s glow in the dark and I really want to be at that kind of party for the first time in my own life.  *laugh*

I opened the door to your room and find that it’s getting harder to imagine having my own daughter in there.  Clothes and knickknacks strewn about, papers on your desk, and you laying on the bed fast asleep with your tablet still in your hand.  Abby will probably be curled up with you, since she dashes into your room the moment the door is cracked open and jumps up on the bed to see what’s going on.

What kind of music will I hear playing on your echo?  Will you tell me who your latest crush is or which school subject you think is so lame?  Will there be enough time for us to help you believe in love; enough time to help you truly believe that you have been wanted for a long time and although you’ll be our chosen child, you will never be replaceable?

We were so ready and excited to have you come into our lives.  Right now it feels like we put our wishes and dreams into a bottle and it’s just floating around in the ocean, bobbing along with the current.   It’s getting hard to believe that our bottle will ever make it.  Sometimes my faith in the process is difficult to cling to and I lose my way.  Then I see an ad for prom dresses or some commercial of a daughter hugging her mom right before she walks down the aisle, and I have this little flare of hope that we will someday have these moments together.  I’m trying hard to keep that hope alive despite the delays.

We wanted to make sure to find, meet, and start visitations before school ends this semester, so that you can have the summer with us to adjust to your new life and hopefully work through the trauma of change, leading to some attachment before the new school year starts.  School is stressful enough; I don’t want to make this harder for you, even though there’s a part of me that is completely selfish and doesn’t want to think about anything beyond moving you in as soon as we possibly can regardless of when it is.  I’m not sure if there will be enough time to have the ideal plan play out.  Although I hope we know that it’s you as soon as we see your profile, I know that it’s not likely.  The likelihood that you’re the first child we proceed to the BIS for is nearly nonexistent.  I’d fill out every scrap of the mountain of paperwork again if it’d help us get past the delay and resume our journey.

I pray for you every night.  I hope you’re happy and safe; I hope that some tiny part of your heart can believe that we are waiting for the chance to find you.  We just need that chance – we promise to not stop until you are home.  We will spend the rest of our lives loving you, no matter how hard it is for you to believe.  No matter how hard this journey is.  And I’m putting this out in the world so that you will someday have proof that you are worth every moment, every fear, and every tear.  You’re worth dreaming about and waiting for.

Chicken Lazone Recipe by Leah

chicken lazone.jpg

“Brennan’s” in New Orleans published their popular recipe for Chicken Lazone and it has definitely been a hit in our house.  I wanted more sauce to serve over pasta so I upped the amount of spices to our taste and added more cream.  This tasty dish comes together quickly.  People are always surprised at how easy it is when I share the recipe with them.

Chicken Lazone

Yield: 6 servings

1 tsp salt

3 tsp chili powder

3 tsp onion powder

4 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp cayenne pepper

3 lbs chicken thighs

1/4 cup butter, divided

2 cups heavy cream

1 lb linguine, cooked according to box directions

  1. Combine salt, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper.  Sprinkle over both sides of the chicken.
  2. In a large saute pan, melt half of the butter over medium-high heat.  Cook the chicken until done, about 8 minutes.
  3. Pour the cream and remaining butter into the skillet.  Lower heat and simmer until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes.  Serve chicken and sauce over prepared pasta.

I went back to Backdrop City and decided to get in theme for two areas.  I’ve been a bit more extreme since I’ve been running a fever with the second virus I got on top of the bronchitis, which is thankfully now improving after I caught the second one.  *laugh* So, I went sweet and feminine, and then I went to the extreme with some post butt kicking.  One of the best parts about SL is that you can be anything and anyone you want at any moment, so you can be sweet and spicy all in the same day!  By the way, I had a really hard time picking which photos I liked, now that I’m playing with windlights and poses, so I’m just going to do collages of my favorite four pictures from the two opposites.  *grin*

Bre’s Sugar Photo Shoot

Bre’s Spice Photo Shoot

I have a lot more pictures of the Harley Quinn shoot because I had so much fun, so expect to see another one, but it may take a few days to find a volunteer or two to become bloody victims.  *grin*  I honestly never thought about doing actual themed pictures before and seldom ever changed my windlight from CalWL or Name’s Optimal Skin and Prim, but I have learned that I have missed out on some interesting WLs for all of these years.  It’s also a lot more fun to do this than organize inventory or go through at least a thousand textures to pick one for the living room rug!

Now for some credits in case you want to go shopping or have a fun photo shoot.
